    Is anyone using RC1 already?

You can download a copy at http://download.windowsvista.com/pre...n/download.htm

And info on hw reqs & other bits can be found http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...y/preview.mspx

RC1 will be good until June 1, 2007.

The thread for the Vista Beta can be found http://tsikot.yehey.com/forums/showt...ighlight=vista

At 249Kb/sec (and slowly rising), it's slow downloading the dvd iso of the 64-bit version. Estimated wait=2:07 hours. The Linux Mandriva dvd iso took 1.5 hours by comparison.....

I'm also downloading MechCommander Gold (MC 2 yesterday) using the P3-733.

Both pc's are busy with downloads today......

It isn't warez and you download it from Microsoft.com so I dont think anyone would mind. I also heard you just click on "Next" and you it'll activate it without the activation key. I'll know in 15 mins time.

According to the Download Manager I'm downloading it at 223KB/Sec (about 2 Mbps) and I peaked at 779.3KB/Sec (about 6 Mbps).

I'm going to install Vista RC1 as a guest OS in Virtual PC 2004. But, I have to use the 32-bit version and not the 64-bit version I have here. I'm downloading the 32-bit Vista RC1 right now. Looks like I have a good connection this time, 779KB/sec. I should have the thing downloaded in less than an hour.

I'll try installing the 64-bit version to a 2.5" 60gb usb2 external hard drive which I'm formatting right now.

I have installed in one partition Beta 2 then overwritten it with Pre-RC1, overwritten again with RC1 on the same hard disk which also has the partition of my XP SP2... no problems since both are NTFS partitions...

Thanks Cris for providing feedback! Now I know I have to upgrade our fleet of computer systems if I want to install Vista to them.

My data's too valuable for a shared or seperate partition with RC1 and running RC1 on a shared or seperate partition isnt a realistic setup if I were to run Vista on a PC.

I wouldn't bother with Office 2007 until it is RC1.

Well, it's a no go for the USB2 external hard drive. I have a spare Maxtor 40gb somewhere. I 'll use that one instead..... If I can find it first...

VPC 2004 doesn't want to boot Vista install from dvd media either....

I agree. I don't mix major beta software like Vista with my real-world use software either.

I tried installing teh 32-bit version to a 40gb maxtor hard drive. I got as far as 72% copied until the installation stopped because of an error about not being able to find a file.

I tried again and this time it crapped out as soon as my copy started. I may have crappy dvd media. &%*$U Memorex!

Edit: Vista Beta is low priority for me. So, that's about it until the actual release version comes out.....

Oh well for those not comfortable with both production & test versions of software int their own PC... I guess you should be disciplined enough to have all the back-ups done... I have an external 60Gb USB HDD & DVD Writer and another PC to park data so I guess I have triple assurance that my data will still be there when everything goes wrong...

Then if your not contributing anything for this thread and trying to trash the software then I guess you have no place to write posts here in this thread...

On a pc with the folowing specs:
    AMD X2 4200+
    2gb DDR400 ram
    ASUS X800XL ViVo
    40gb hard drive

Vista Ultimate is smooth especially with the Catalyst drivers. I haven't installed any games yet. For now, I'm just exploring around..... So far so good.

I'm not fond of the thick border around windows or at least there should be a way to make it very thin as in XP. Graphics/monitors/refresh rates still need some work. I'm running dual-monitor at 2048x768. I can't get one of the Samsung crt monitors to go to 1152x864. It should be ok though with lcd's.

I installed Paintshop Pro 8 which worked perfectly. A slight registry glitch I had in XP is now gone.

    I like this effect:
