normally, a sperm contains the full complement of 23 chromosomes.
it has the usual 22 chromosomes; the 23rd chromosome is the s3x chromosome. a Y if male sperm, and an X if female sperm.

the egg from the female has, similarly, 22. but the 23rd chromosome of the egg is always an X.

so what union determines the s3x of the offspring?
if XY, it's a male.
if XX, it's a female.
any other abnormal combination that is without a Y, is a female. abnormal, but female.
