For us, my dad’s family descended from a sibling of Guardia Civil soldiers who opted to stay when the Spaniards left. One settled in Cavite while another one settled in Zamboanga. My dad was born and raised in Zamboanga but I never did embrace the Chavacano dialect.

One day, I will travel to Spain and try to trace my roots. All I can remember from my dad was that our forefathers came from Andalusia.

Tracing the family tree is something that all families should do. Will be good for the kids & a sure topic for conversation, especially during family reunions. But an undesirable offshoot of this are all the family secrets that come out.

It is so much harder to immigrate to the US. That is also one reason why I went as an immigrant kasi naghirap din family ko to get me to the US as an immigrant. I don't plan to immigrate else where but if I had the choice it would be Europe, sa nordic or scandinavian countries. I don't like UK and France, medyo magulo na with too much mixed races. I prefer to be where there are the least Asians :P

Re Spain, I was also told about that but I think it is specific to certain families only? Also, up to what degree in ancestry. Almost all Filipinos naman claim to have some percentage of Spanish blood We have published documentation of my grandparents basque origin, pero Spain looks down on the Basques naman so I don't think I will pass if I tried.

I don't look Basque anymore since my blood is diluted with Filipino blood already :P It's kind of funny that my 92 yr old paternal grandmother is very particular about it, e siya nga yung Filipino :P
