Ang dalas ng commercial ads nila, primetime pa. Where do they get their revenues? Free naman ang apps nila and wala naman akong napapasin na ads sa mga apps nila.

WeChat is a Chinese company just like Huawei. Originally it's name was Weixin but rebranded in 2012 for international market. Most likely subsidized by government to penetrate market share. So they sell them very competitively or give for free until they get majority of market share. Afterwhich you can speculate what China can and will do.
I don't have wechat or line. I installed line but since I have very few contacts on line, I removed it na lang. Most are on viber and whatsapp.
They are pushing more people to use their data plans regularly. The more people using it will push others to use it as well. Eventually it will reach a tipping point many will find using "chat" softwares to communicate a requirement like SMS. This will push more people to get data plans to complement their voice plans on their mobile phones.
So both telcos must be sponsoring one of each. WeChat and Line.

The cellphone market is already saturated, and competition is tight(thankfully) that's why they have all those cool call/text packages. They need a new source of income -- mobile data/surfing. And if there really isn't a need for it, they will invent one -- e.g. Facebook, LINE, WeChat.
The thing about LINE is that it's the first one that has a TVC; lakas ng backers nito
Regarding WeChat's "plan" : ganun naman talaga lahat e. Offer them cheap or free, saturate the market, kill the competition, get people hooked. Once you own the market, you're can do as you please.

hmm Parang Facebook in a sense. pushing for more end users. risky but if the telecoms are sponsoring such apps, the cost might be justifiable to risk.
