What can you say about an employer who denies an employee to attend his/her kid's gradutaion?
Give a little background, I can't say employer is wrong, since we don't know the context or what really happen.
But it's Employee's responsibility to file the leave in advance.
Fix date naman yun graduation date.
It's unfair to solicit reply without the whole picture.
If employee don't agree then resign and look for a new job. That simple.

Meron kaming employee dito... hindi nalang pumasok one day. Graduation daw ng anak. Ni text sa boss/HR, wala. Tinext lang yung kasama.
Sarap i declare ng AWOL at kaltasan ng sweldo...
It's as if hindi niya alam na mag ggraduate anak niya on that date...
Kung ako boss neto, denied din yung leave. Dapat in advance ni file...
Yes, employees are filing their leave 3 days in advance prior to the graduation day, upon submitting their leave, employer will go like "graduation lang mag aabsent na? do you really have to attend the gradutaion? kami nga nung nag graduate anak namin hindi kami umattend, if you want to go on leave then you might as well go on leave forever" (in mandarin), employers are taiwanese, and nature of business is manufacturing of furnitures.
Thats a crap working environment. He has no respect nor empathy for his employees. I would leave.

Karapatan nang tao ang mag leave. Kaya nga kasama sa kontrata ang leave credits. He / she can use it anytime unless walang maiiwan para mag cover sa kanya.

Try to put it this way. Kung nagfile nang leave without pay yan. May maririnig ka kaya sa employer? I would assume none since they are not paying him / her. In my limited view and information you shared, i think that company just dont want to pay the employee. In short, kuripot at madaya.

Minsan abusado rin Employees. Lahat ng dahilan ginagamit para hinde pinasok. Namatay aso ng kapitbahay mag leave. Namatay yun pinsan ng pinsan ng pinasan ng pinsan ng kapitbahay nakatira doon sa probinsiya mag leave.

Sa case ko ngayon hindi na kailangan i-specify yung reason ng leave (lalo na kung may leave credits pa).
Basta ang rule lang ay kapag 1 day na VL kelangan at least 3 days notice.
Kapag tipong 2 days - week/s long dapat mga 1week - 1 month before.
Sa IT company ako nagwo-work, software development ang trabaho.
Yan ang rule ko para sa mga under sa akin.
Basta kelangan lang ay maging informed ako as early as possible ng mga leave nila para magawan namin ng paraan na ma-lessen yung impact.
Madalas nga ay simula pa lang ng taon ay naka-plot na yung VL nila for holy week, all souls/saints week, christmas season at extension of long weekends.
Crappy boss. Leave for good if you ask me. Daming ibang work jan who will treat you better.
As for whether the employees have habitual absenteeism, not all, but there are some.. naiiintindihan ko if nadedeny yung sa mga panay ang absent or even those who would leave dahil lang birthday niya (this is just my opinion).. but like yung sa isang supervisor dito, who works even on sundays, and sometimes on holidays.. he filed a vacation leave months ahead before.. muntik pang maudlot ang leave niya.. he was able to go on with his vacation kasi the time he filed his leave eh wala ang big boss, so ang assistant to the boss ang nag decide.. by the time na malapit na magleave yung employee, dun pa lang nalaman ng big boss about the leave, ayun, kesyo bakit di daw itapat sa holiday ang bakasyon.. eh samantalang pati holidays pinatatrabaho nila
Good responses. We have personal reasons to take leaves but employee has to apply for it ahead of time especially if his function is critical in operations.

Ang rule samin 3 days in advance also. Pero pag peak period, bawal mag leave.
Meron sa office namin na habitual din ang absent tapos dati nag file ng SL e nakasalubong ng isang AVP na nasa gimik area ng Makati nung gabi. Hinanapan ng butas yun para ma force resign.
I think reasonable naman ang mga boss, pero I agree na yung mga "bad shot" or may history, medyo mahigpit sila when it comes to approving leaves.
Only fair naman.
If you're sick, ok lang. Hindi naman pinaplano yan (except for Sick leaves used to go to the doctor pero by appointment naman pala)
Pero pag ganitong bagay (like a graduation), hindi pwedeng biglaan... Nakakasira ng schedule and sets a precedent for others
