Binay camp explains relief bags with OVP’s seal
Manila BulletinManila Bulletin – Sat, Nov 16, 2013
Manila, Philippines - The camp of Vice President Jejomar C. Binay yesterday said relief goods being distributed by the second highest elected official for victims of super typhoon “Yolanda” have “no markings.”
However, relief goods donated by a Binay supporter in Iloilo had stickers bearing the seal of the Office of the Vice President, a spokesman said.
Binay’s spokesman Joey Salgado issued the clarification after some pictures of the supposed relief goods from Binay’s office circulated on social media.
Based from the pictures circulating on Twitter and Facebook, a sticker that bore the seal of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) was attached to the white plastic bag containing the relief goods. Salgado on Twitter (*salgado_joey) said that OVP relief goods were in plain white plastic bags.
“Per report of the OVP relief team, relief goods were in plain white plastic bags. Matter is being investigated,” he said amid negative feedback from some netizens on the labeled relief packs.
“To clarify, OVP relief goods are in plain white plastic bags, no markings. Thanks,” he said in another tweet.
A video from Binay’s office taken last Wednesday showed his staff repacking hundreds of relief goods in plain white plastic sans the supposed sticker that bore the OVP seal and Binay’s name.
Netizens blasted Binay for using the situation to allegedly advance his political interests.
After verification, Salgado claimed the relief bags with stickers were found to have been donated by a supporter of Binay in Iloilo.
“Relief bags with stickers were donated by Engr. Nelson Golez of Iloilo. Plain white bags are from OVP,” Salgado tweeted later on Friday.
Some bags donated by Golez were sent to Capiz along with OVP relief bags, he said.
“*VPJojoBinay thanks Mr. Golez for his donation,” Salgado also tweeted.
Binay’s office last Thursday said around 40,000 relief goods are being distributed in some towns in Capiz, Iloilo and Cebu that have been heavily damaged by “Yolanda.”
