If they made this game just like the game freak style of leveling and evolving maybe those 90's kids will be hooked. Some just want to play it because almost everyone does.

Salamence was gen 3 (Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald). Mudkip is also gen 3. Blaziken is also gen 3 (not gen 2). Gen 2 fire-type is Typhlosion.
I stopped playing after gen 2 (Gold/Silver/Crystal) but played FireRed and LeafGreen which are based on gen 3 (GBA) gameplay but followed the story of gen 1 (Red/Blue/Yellow).
My younger cousins also played the later versions. Didn't bother to keep up with them because newer Pokemons don't seem to be as well thought out as the first and second gen. I memorize the first 151 by heart though, and I'm still familiar with almost all of the next 100. The latter gens, I just know the famous ones.

But most 90s kids do play...it's the older and younger set that needs the improved gameplay to get hooked. Pokemon Go captures 90s kids (who played Pokemon RBY) through nostalgia alone. Other people will need something more compelling.
No doubt they will need to add trading and battling with friends to make the game compelling. It's very difficult evolving rare Pokemons because of the candy requirement, and gyms are nothing but bragging rights (and a few Pokecoins per day).
Actual battling/trading within friends will definitely boost the social aspect of the game to greater heights than before (where you needed a link cable to do one on one trades/battles).

I'm one of the 90's kids. Wish they sticked to the jrpg returned based leveling battling pokemons. The only nostalgic here is the gen 1 Pokemons. Maybe it's just me but I prefer the old gameplay feel. It's new but it doesn't mean it's better IMHO.

August 20th, 2016 11:40 AM #185When the first pokemon go trailer came out, it had scenes showing people battling against each other. It might come in a future patch.

If you prefer the old gameplay you can always download a GB emulator. It's what I did before Pokemon Go.
Now, the new gameplay is an interesting twist though it gets old easily. Niantic has to release new patches to enrich the experience - like I said, trading and battling.

ano ba trick sa battling? I just look at the Pokémon defender and Google which type can beat it. Then pag battle na I just tap and swipe, parang button smashing. ni hindi ko alam kung para san yung Blue rectangle sa name ng Pokémon.

Yup basically you use your Pokemon's type advantage so that the opponent's attacks will not be very effective (0.75x damage).
At the same time, you use attacks that are super effective against the opponent's type (1.25x). You can check the type of the attack by clicking on your Pokemon's profile.
For my Ponyta, its first attack (this is the attack your Pokemon uses) is normal type even if Ponyta is a fire type.
The blue bar is the Pokemon's secondary attack, which you can only use when the bar is full. To use it, long press on the enemy until a textbox appears indicating your Pokemon has used its secondary attack.
In this case, my secondary attack is Fire Blast, which is a fire type attack. The secondary attack is usually much stronger than the primary attack, but of course it takes time to charge it.
