Quotes (on a wall in the museum):
"When I was a young man, I used to think that going on an act of service was all excitement. But going to war is not all excitement because in the end, it's not all brass bands and smart uniforms, but it's purgatory, agony and for some, it's the ultimate - it's death. You're stuck in a hole in the ground and there is nothing there. In front of you is the enemy, then you know the reality of it."
- Leonard Butler, merchant navy sailor and civilian internee.
"My values are quite changed. I am no more materialistic, even to this day. Never mind if I have no mansion, no diamonds...still I'm happy."
- Elizabeth Choy, who was tortured at the hands of the Kempeitai for more than 200 days and died in 2006 at the age of 96.
"I have seen houses where members of the family fought for food just like animals. This experience, I don't think we'll see again. Youngsters of today do not understand if I tell them not to waste food. Every single morsel of food, don't waste because you have not encountered the difficulty, the scarcity that we have been through."
- Abu Bakar Ali, apprentice in a Japanese shipyard.
