Dapat ang rate ng MRT more or less 2x the cost of buses minimum... It doesn't take a genius to know that they won't make money with such low fares, kapalit lang nyan lack of maintenace eventually.

They should increase it only by a portion, after a thorough evaluation, and get the feel on how the public will react. Going to P72 outright is suicide. I agree that guaranteeing an ROI of so much to the investor is the norm for a project (like the government deals with the IPPs), but P72 is just too much right now. Di ba't ang Piso raw ay tumataas laban sa dolyar?

for me 72 is too much... dapat siguro kahit mga 30 lang muna... then increase na lang ulit after a year... or like what others say... dapat nung una pa lang eh tinaasan na nila... lets wait and see what happens next...

Why bother with how the public will react? The public will only make comments like "PINAPAHIRAPAN MGA MANGAGAWA AT MASA" bullcrap even if you just raise it by 50 cents?!

Yan ang hirap sa gov't dito, hilig bigyan ng false pretense na affordable ang isang bagay even if they know that they promised the investor that their investment will be sustainable and promising.

Hook and bait tactics, such a shame, mga scammers lang gumagawa nyan.

initially mataas yung rate ng MRT.. 36 yata yung end-to-end. in those days, masarap sumakay ng MRT. i personally did not mind paying that much for the convenience. tapos binaba nila yung fare.. bwisit. haba pila.

if they raise it to 72 pesos now.. wala nang sasakay. balik sa dati for sure. back when the MRT was at 36, mga year 2001 yun eh. wages haven't doubled since then.

but if they are getting 130M pesos per month now (and need $3.6M or about 200M) raising the fare to say 25 would cover their shortfall, and i suspect hindi pa rin babawas ang sasakay (masakit for them yung extra 10 pesos.. pero titiisin nila yun).

on a side-note, for me and my wife taking the FX to and from work ends up more expensive than taking the car (if only fuel costs are taken into account). and that's only 30 pesos per person each way (120 pesos total per day.. and gas guzzler pa yung car namin). so 72 pesos MRT is too expensive.

afaik, worldwide naman, walang kumikita sa mass transit system, kung fares lang pag uusapan. kumikita sila sa mga 'sideline' businesses, like renting space, developing real estate along the transit system, advertising, etc. or, you can wrangle sweet government subsidies.

now that i think about it, the 72 peso fare could just be a headfake. highball everybody at the onset, then 'relent' to a lower figure(na mataas pa rin), and still come out smelling like roses

In any city around the world, subways/mass transit rail have always been more expensive / km than busses and minibus systems since you're paying premium for the speed and convenience of using the transit.

Syempre dito ang consumers never think about the investment of the company...

Easy to say if someone has a fat salary check but in reality majority of Pinoy will not afford that rate.

So you'd say that you'd rather see the whole investment crumble in 5 years time due to lack of income just so that "everyone" can use it?

It'll end up like the Philippine railways...

30kph lang takbo coz they have to give way to the people who lives along the track...

Personally from end to end I would pay no more than 50 pesos for the MRT if their ticketing system would improve (lesser queues) and if the trains and stations themselves wouldnt be too crowded.

I'm not against raising it bro but Php72 is a hefty amount of money! What I mean is give the MRT users a fair amount of fare increase. (rhyme ba? :D)

I have to agree with theveed, they should have charged a higher rate than P15 initially, modernization comes at a cost. True the average Juan cannot afford this but there are cheaper alternatives like buses.

Same justification as taxi's, not a lot of people can afford them (not even I, I take the bus to work, 10 petot lang hehe) but it's not like that's the only way to get from north to south.

Or should i say, i would be willing to pay 50 pesos...

On a side note, mahirap na baguhin ugali ng pinoy. feeling mahihirap... pero ang gagastos sa mga ibang bagay...

Sadly the fate of the mrt would soon be like the lrt. Di tulad ng sa ibang bansa (esp. in Europe), medyo mahal nga binabayad mo pero maganda quality ng services.

We get what we pay for.

OT- Yan ang theveed,- may political will! Sadly, wala tayo niyan sa gobyerno. Tell us if you're running for public office,- ipangangampanya ka namin! We need guys like him to run this country.

Pero, seriously, the LRT/MRT is one of the better things that happened in our public transport scenario. The government should have forged a balance at the onset such that projects are not overcommitted, and more importantly, will not fail. Worst of all, we, taxpayers(again!) are shouldering such shortsighted and shady decisions.

    I also agree with theveed.

Regarding taxis, pansinin nyo kung gaano kadami kaya mag afford sa taxi, kala ko ba tipid mga tao dito satin?

I myself rarely ride taxis, in fact in the last 3 years I've only taken a taxi about 2-3 times. I'd rather take the jeep or bus or walk, because its more practical and I can save money for other expenses. (Of course now I drive my own car to work but mainly because I work during the night shift).

hahaha, lalong babagsak ang pinas, dahil alien ako... :P

nasasayangan lang ako sa mga kalokohan ng policies and the pro-poor (na hindi naman talaga) tactics ng gov't... downward spiral eh.
