In a word, faith. Faith isn't called faith for nothing.
Assuming you believe in God, I think that TODAY God wants us to have faith in him, no matter what. In the past miracles did not secure people's faith. Why would God reward us when we only believe when we saw miracles? God wants us to trust him no matter what. Why would he reward us with eternal life when we only trust him during times of happiness and lose faith in times of distress? God wants us to trust him in the middle of an agonizing illness, in the midst of a business debacles, in the pain of losing a loved one. That's faith for you.
He's shown many miracles in the past and yet people disobeyed. For example, King Solomon even worshipped his 900 wives' and 300 concubines' god and goddesses despite the enormous wealth and wisdom God gave him. Now I think God wants to test our faith in the absence of miracles. I think he is more pleased when we believe in him even if he seemed distant and non-existent. God gives us free will and yet he wants us to surrender it to him completely, with or without miracles. Very difficult to accept. So very against human nature!
In Christ's time, Jesus preached love of God unconditionaly. He performed wonders only to show people God's glory as he said himself. But why do you think Jesus did not perform miracles when his life depended on it? Like when Herod asked for a miracle, just like the teachers of the Law who had him arrested demanded it so they will let him go? I think the message of Christ is total faith and trust in God without conditions. This is something new for the Jews at that time. People ridiculed Christ on the cross to perform a miracle to save himself. But did he?
Today as in Christ's time, many people want to see a miracle before believing. We want facts to start having faith. We challenge God for dramatic proof of his existence. Will God then be obliged? I don't know. All I know is that God will not be mocked. "Revenge is mine!" says the Lord. For one who owns time, I guess he can wait. The demons believe in God and they tremble.
Jesus himself constantly prayed alone and also fasted. I think it's where he gets his spiritual strength and power to obey and to submit to God's will. With God nothing is impossible. And that bible statement, too, invites ridicule.
I hope I answered your question.
