Jim, just remember that it's not the qualifications that count but mostly the connections. Hindi na sya nahirapan at mataas ang sahod dahil nga may manager na nagrecommend sa kanya. Just do your work honestly and efficiently. If you're not happy with the management's styles, its either na magtiis ka or shop around. Dito nga sa amin, may ipinasok ang big boss, ang sweldo is more than 30% of my salary considering na lower pa ang position kaysa sa akin.

She never negotiated with the compensation offer kasi she got more than what she asked for (ako grabe ang negotiation na ginawa ko). Sa technical skills at knowlege were par naman.
Ganun talaga yan, especially in big companies. Sipsip dito, siraaan doon, just to get ahead. Palakasan talaga, wherever you go. Like before, when I used to be employed in a large company, there was this guy who went to the manager, tapos dinaan sa iyak at hagulgol... ayan na promote, kahit unpopular siya. People will resort to anything just to get ahead.

Kahit na super galing ka sa field mo, rarely will people like that get promoted. Ang mentality kasi ng mag nasa taas, eh if they can sqeeze you dry, that is, leave you in your position forever (tutal magaling ka naman), they will. Eh sino pa hahawak? Yung mas-incompetent?

Kaya notice, most of the better people who are good, end up being entrepreneurs, kasi mas sulit talaga.

Three things determine a 'successful' career: talent + hard work + luck. Some people are just either more talented, more hardworking or luckier...

probably the job isn't just for you sir. there's probably a better one waiting if you just look for it hard enough. remember, for every door that closes, another one opens. ika nga, it's not how you fall down that's important, it's how you rise up that counts. also, remember that sometimes blessings comes in disguise of failure. so cheer up, everyday is always a good day to start anew!

viewing this from the standpoint of management :

    1. Does your management allow that there will exist distortions in the salary scale of employees? Pag nag Senior ManComm meeting na, mahirap i-defend yan ng isang division head kung paano nagkaroon ng off-scale hiring sa unit nya. (parang sinabi ni j_avonni: 30% higher pay for a lower position). These are the sort of practices that breeds grievances amongst employees-these practices should not even be allowed.
    2. The higher paid people get the toughest job: remember management is aware of your carrying cost- isusulit ka ng employer mo. e.g. highly paid corporate banker of Citibank (works 18hrs/day * 6 days a week) whereas a lower paid corporate banker from a local bank (works 8hrs/day * 5 days a week). Q: is the higher pay worth the stress?
    3. There's already the SEC imposed Corporate Governance whereby the Compensation & Remuneration Committee of the Board of Directors can just freely review the salary structure of the company for all employees (patay ang manager na naghire off-scale, sya mateterminate ng board).

the above is on the assumption na di-hamak malaki talaga agwat ng sweldo ng friend mo compared sa iyo for the same job description, level, & expertise.

siguro nga po ganyan na ang nauuso ngayon, it is not what you know but whom you know, ika nga...(kaya ako, kung lilipat ako ng trabaho, sabi ko maghahanap din ako ng malakas na backer ko hehehhe)

Specific to the situation you described, I think its unfair. But again if you will perform better than her in the future, you'll eventually overtake her in terms of incentives or salary increase. If again, in spite of your better performance over her, and you will still get the least incentives and salary, I think then you're working with an unhealthy organization.

ganyan talaga buhay, in the first place eh paano mo nalaman yung salary nya, dapat kasi confidential, ganito rin kasi nangyayari sa company namin, demoralised mga tao dahil nalalaman nila na mas malaki sweldo ng bagong pasok with less no. of work years experience than them...

dati naapektuhan pa ako sa mga ganyan, pero ngayon hindi na, i just do my job dahil i'm being paid for it and there's promotion naman with salary increase (pero mababa pa din hehe) ..

eto natutunan ko, if you really want to get higher salary, resign and transfer to a different company and bargain your salary, then transfer again after ilang years lang like 2-4years.. ganito kasi ginagawa ng mga newly hired sa amin and malaki nga sweldo nila compared sa aming mga "solid" sa company hehe

and if you're not happy with your employer, you can always resign and find a better job

well she's my friend kaya nalaman ko ang sweldo nya hehehehe (close kasi kami kaya di nya maitago sa akin what really bothers me talaga is how the management will rate us their employees. i'm confident and i know i can do the job better than my friend (she accepts it naman) but it really disturbs me to know that there is no salary structure in our company. nung nakikipag-negotiate ako sabi ng management na meron silang salary structure na sinusunod then suddenly after a while nalaman ko na ganun yung offer sa friend ko (around 10K ang taas nya kesa sa akin) but we have the same position and rank huh??!?? with the salary she has she could pass as a manager in another company!!!

    well ganyan talaga
thats why i make it a point not to ask nor tell my colleagues how much i make para walang badtrip samin hehehe

pero i noticed though that in the IT industry, pag hindi ka lipat ng lipat ng job, walang mangyayari sa yo. pang 4 na trabaho ko na to hehehe :D

hehe, at least you know that your company is capable of paying that high salary, and you can probably demand a more higher increase next time

pero take note, even if you can do a better job than her, pwedeng mas magaling yung friend mo in the eyes of your manager

ganyan talaga ang buhay, pareng Jim...minsan nalalamangan ka. the question is if you can live with it or not.

parang basketball din yan, but unlike the PBA/NBA, wala palang salary cap sa company nyo. kung 'veteran' ka na at may binigay ang company na mas mataas na package sa isang rookie/sophomore having the same position as yours, then look for another company who could give more value to your talents. like si joe johnson, may opportunity syang maging star player sa atlanta compared sa phoenix, plus they are offering a bigger salary pa, so he preferred leaving phoenix. pero sa tingin ng phoenix he's not all-star material & worth more than $70M (but that's beside the point). what i mean is, dont price yourself too high for the market, unless you have special skills (think Shaq ) tsaka kung di ka na masaya sa position mo, then there are always other companies (teams) to look out for.

yup true. the manager might pin his eyes on her rather than looking at others who are performing better. in that case i might be selfish this time. ako kasi palagi ang tanungan at takbuhan ng mga kaibigan ko pag may problems sila sa mga servers at databases nila. maybe ngayon hahayaan ko na lang na sila na mismo ang mag-resolve ng mga probs nila and if just in case talagang kelangan na talaga ang tulong ko, i'll make sure the manager knows na ako yung tumatrabaho

well, tulungan mo naman...but is she's the type that takes credit for other people's work -- intentional man o hindi -- i wouldn't really blame you if you left her twisting in the wind. pwera na lang siguro kung major problem na; in that case your maturity should shine through and you should help out. remember to take credit for your work though ;)
