I accidentally run over a poor homeless puppy 3 years ago. It was sleeping under my car. I din't hear the squeek because the music was too loud and my windows were all closed.

And it's something that I will never ever forget. I felt so horrible afterwards. I cried because I went out of the car and saw the puppy die Shook his head took his last breath and died..

Memory haunted me and robbed me off of sleep for weeks. I kept telling myself that theres a heaven for canines and he's there and happy now.

I felt like hell running over a puppy. Iam very very careful when I'm driving now I feel so guilty crushing a poor being under my car.

I can't imagine how it must have been like for those people who have accidentally run over a person.

How did it feel like accidentally running over a person?

this is one thing i dont want to experience or find out!

it must be horrible running over a person, regardless of who's fault it is.

i believe its going to be much harder to deal with than running over a puppy..

I used to work at the same place as one of my mom's kumares (call her J) in NV. 3 am one early morning, I was hitching a ride with her (plus a bunch of other pinays) in her van.

We were moving along uneventfully when the van was jarred by a big thud. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something big in the air fly past. J thought she hit a coyote. But, I said it's way too big to be a coyote. Fearing the worse, she stopped and ran back to see what she hit.

It turned out, it was a caucasian guy who worked at a nearby plant. The guy was walking along the road when J dozed off and hit the guy. He was dead on the spot with a snapped neck and other trauma.

J settled with the guy's family out of court. But, she never carpooled again and became reclusive. It's been years and she's still hurting.

As for animals, I have no guilt whatsover because I've ran over so many through the years:
    jackrabbits
    whistle pigs (gopher-like rodents)
    snakes
    coyotes
birds hitting the windshield or the front grill
    armadillos (Texas)
    pack rats

    near misses:
    deer
    cows
    wild boar

Let me share what happened to someone I know:

He was driving home one night from work when he felt a bump along Alabang-Zapote Road. At first, he didn't care but after about five minutes, he was bothered and made a U-Turn to check.

Upon arriving the said area, there were the Police and some "uzi-seros". He got down and asked what's going on. He asks a bystander,

    "Pare, ano nangyari?"

"Nasagasaan yung tao. Tapos may tatlo pang kotseng dumaan sa bangkay. Di ko na napansin yung huli kse ang bilis nya."

He was the last one to ran over the person but at that time, the person was already dead.

Then he left and went home.

almost ran over a guy once. happened two years ago on dark part of the highway as i was on my way home here in laguna. medyo mabilis takbo ko since nasa highway ako. i have no trouble driving at night and nakita ko yung guy starting to cross the road.

nag-slow down ako, flashed my lights, and honked twice. nakita naman nya ko kasi bumagal yung pagtawid nya. kaso, nung nakita nya nag-slow down din ako, he attempted to continue crossing before me! problema lang di nya na-judge yung speed ko. i had to swerve -good thing wala ako kasabay- to avoid him. centimeters lang pagitan for me to sideswipe him. i was panting, my pulse rate was over 100, and my heart was in my throat all in the space of a couple of seconds.

as i passed him, i heard something hit the car and saw a flash over the windshield - he was holding a plastic bag full of bottles! so thinking na baka meron ako iba pa tinamaan sa kanya i pulled over to the side to see if he's ok. kaso di man lang ako pinansin nung guy and he kept on walking his own way.

ako pa nagalit, muntik ko na nga sya masagasaan (na kasalanan nya) tapos di nya ako papansinin. i kept looking at him to see if he'll turn back pero di man lang lumingon pabalik.

dun ko lang naisip na lasing yun at yung tumama sa kotse eh bottles of gin/beer/whatever. i waited there for more than five minutes for my heart to settle down. i kept sweating (kahit on ang AC) and cussing all the way home.

it took me a few weeks to get over that incident.

Dito pa naman sa atin, kahit kasalanan nung pedestrian yung maling pagtawid, kulong pa rin ang driver.

I have to add that the animals I ran over were all unintentional. Here, we're taught not to swerve because it'll endanger the occupants of the vehicle more. Unless the animal is pretty big like a cow, a deer, or a big dog, I'll keep driving straight and take the hit.

Jackrabbits are commonplace in NV and often instead of running away from the car, they'll hunker down where they sit and......SQUISH!

Whistle pigs like to sit on asphalt roads during the early morning because it absorbs the sun's warmth much quicker than the surrounding brush. Sometimes they're not quick enough to skitter out of the way and......SQUISH!

Wild boar.....I've only encountered one wild boar. I quickly applied my brakes because hitting one is like kicking a bowling ball with your feet. They're that dense.
