    Haven't been here along time.

This one just caught my attention. Anyway, I was in Mapua in '87 to '89. Sorry to say, though there were some real good quality instructors, there were plenty of I would say below standard. I chose that school becasue of its reputation as being very well known sa Engineering. But I was really disappointed. Few real good instructors I had that I can recall are ReyMatias, Manalo, Isip, Flaviano and the BINGO.

But I do agree though that they should have kept the name. Pero the way I understood it is, they will keep the eng/arc name as Mapua. The only thing is may other courses na besides eng/arc.

i am not a mapuan but i have high regard to engineering graduates of that school. true, the school was known because of the engineering programs, and that changing its name to "malayan" really is not immediately acceptable to some of the grads there. i will not assume to know the reason behind the change of the name, but could it be that "mapua" as a name only markets well their engineering courses? could it not be that one of the primary reasons is the marketing of their other courses since many courses now are being demanded by the population? could it be that in order for them to maintain the high marketability and number of students, they should change that engineering-stereotype name attached to mapua? could it be that they have decreased their population that gettin to what are "trendy courses" today is necessary? ano kya?

Ako batch 91 ng Mapua, at grad dun nung Nov 94. Nakabadtrip niya kasi virtually mawawalan ka na ng Alma Mater. Irerecognize pa kaya 'yong diploma k na Mapua? Pano pag humingi ako ng transcript of records or request ng diploma? Malayan na kaya ang nakalagay sa logo?
Kikita pa kaya 'yong mga souvenirs na Mapua ang tatak? tsk tsk tsk

Ano pala ang tamang bigkas ng Malayan. Is it 'MA-LA-YAN' OR 'MA-Lé-YâN'

'Yong pangalawa kas parang MALI YAN ang dating....

I disagree na kailangan palitan ang name because kilala ang Mapua lang sa Engineering course only. That's full of crap! Do you all remember AMA College? Di ba kilala ang AMA sa computer courses lang before? But look at them now, they morphed into one of the leading multi-disciplinary schools in the Philippines. Only a real Mapuan can understand what this is all about with a few exceptions of course.

With regards to Jesi's statements about below standard Profesors sa Mapua..pare, I beg to disagree. Baka hindi mo alam na some of the professors sa DLSU engineering and other technical schools are professors and Alumni of Mapua. Also, wala sa professor ang pagiging magaling ng isang estudyante...nasa estudyante lahat iyan. The professor/s are only there to guide and impart their knowledge and implement what is in their curriculum; and it all depends on the students' ability to comprehend, evaluate and apply.

Venting ire on its teaching principles and standards will not help its cause lest albeit its demise.

no offence to Mapua studes and grads, but is not that this name change to "malayan university" a bit too presumptuous? at a time when philippine universities are being ranked at the LOWEST in terms of quality of education in asia (my alma mater, UP included), they dare call mapua "malayan"??? are they trying to insinuate that mapua is now the premier university for the malay race (filipinos and malaysians, and even parts of indonesia included)? just wait till the malaysians, whose universities have long ago overtaken the philippines, hear about this! "malayan university" will be the laughing stock of all time!

instead of a name change, why not try to recover its lost prestige first by once again becoming one of the finest universities in asia? Mapua was once one of the best, but sad to say today it is not. even UP-diliman ranks at the bottom 100 of the 500 asian universities listed. and Mapua's reaction is "let's change our name to malayan!" DUH!

Hindi naman siguro yun yung intention nila pero if they can achieve that then why not ? They probably have more funds than UP anyway... Ganun din siguro yung reasong nang name nang University of Asia and the Pacific... mas wide range yan kesa sa Malay people lang

but would it not be better that they achieve first what they intend to be before they begin calling themselves that? it's like saying they are one of the best when in fact ALL philippine universities are at the bottom of the rankings.

anyway, i suppose everyone is entitled to their own illusions!

For me, quality of eduction is more important than the name, kahit na dagdagan pa nila ng 5th year or grade 7 kung palyado parin system of education wala din mangyayari. But thats just me. Opinion ko lang po.

see, this is what Im saying. Only the students and quality of education can change the way people look at the graduates of certain school, not a NAME CHANGE.

    to all mapuans,

kung pwede kayo sa monday, subukan nating pumunta. i'm not sure about the mass, pero sure ung protest sa monday. o kaya sabihan niyo na lang ung mga ka batch niyo. ngayon lang nangyari sa history na mapua to sa pagkakaalam ko. dati kasi lagi na lang sunod sunuran mga estudyante ng mapua. nung naging quarterm hinayaan na lang namin. wala kasing support ang NAMA non. ngayon, suportado na ng NAMAN ung movement. kaya suportahan natin to hanggat makakaya natin. ibahin nanatin ngayon. LALABAN NA TAYO!!!!

    un lang po salamat!

    hehe
