SMS-speak, in my opinion, is poison. I receive lots of messages where I have to reply back just to clarify what the sender actually meant. Ironic, considering that SMS shortcuts were supposed to save us a few bucks. I'm not totally ignorant of the shortcuts either, some people are just overdoing it. Nasasanay tuloy.

Sadly, it's true. English literacy in the Philippines is going down. One thing I can say though, the solution is not to make kausap to our kids in Engleesh.
I agree! Daming parents na ganyan. Same with SMS-speak, ang sakit sa mata! I don't get the logic of posting in forums SMS style. It's annoying and hard to read, plus kids are thinking it's alright to post or even write a whole email of SMS!

I remember my ROTC officers, the real AFP officers, nakakaawa at nakakatawa sila. For example:

    "Yu der!" Yes? Me Sir?
"Yes yu!" Ok. What about me?
"Way ar yu lapping der?" At this point, napatawa na ako.
"Sanobagan! Geddemit! Yu push ap der! Naw!"

Anything Kris Aquino style language is a good gas too. She's entertaining!

One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory
to his buddy Norm. Here's how it went:

"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this...

A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo.

And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones

at the back that are killed first. This natural

selection is good for the herd

as a whole, because the general speed and

    health of the whole group

keeps improving by the regular killing of the

    weakest members.

In much the same way, the human brain can

only operate as fast as the

slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of

alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells.

But naturally, it attacks the slowest and

    weakest brain cells first.

In this way, regular consumption of beer

    eliminates the weaker brain cells,

making the brain a faster and more efficient

    machine.

That's why you always feel smarter after a

    few beers."

Sometimes I have to think first and translate in my mind of what Im about to say before speaking in english, but the good thing about canadians is that they dont seem to mind if you do make mistakes and get tougue-tied once in a while.

When a child sees a wrong act being committed by an adult, especially his/her parents, the wrong becomes right. Remember the old commercial? Kaya ako naiinis sa mga ganyan. While it's true that these can be corrected, in most cases, they're not. Point is, wag turuan/wag pakitaan ng mali ang mga bata. Idealistic, yes, but I'd choose that over fatalism any day.
hidi naman wrong doing ang pakikipag usap ng baluktot na english sa bata. ang wrong doing eh kung ang english na itinuturo mo eh mga bad words or words that are not polite. point is binibigyan mo sila ng familiarization sa words para pag pasok nila sa school eh matuwid ng wasto ang kamalian. di ba sabi nga there's always a room for improvement. kahit parents ko kinakausap ang anak ko kahit pabaluktot na ingles kasi hanggang dun na lang sila pero ang bata may potential pa once na pumasok sa school.

i remember what my english teacher used to say:

if you're speaking in English, think in English.

Kung magsasalita ka ng tagalog, mag-isip ka sa tagalog. this way, the processes involved are lessened. you don't translate on the fly..
