As a surgeon myself, I'll chime in. Best way to resolve this is to talk to the surgeon who did the surgery on your moms hip and tell him truthfully that you sought another opinion and it seems that there's infection brought about by something that was left behind during the OR. Honesty is the best way for both surgeon and patient with regards to surgical complications. If the surgeon's level headed, he'll do the proper rectification by either addressing the infection himself or allowing you to have the second surgeon fix it. A great compromise in such situations is that the surgeon will pay part or in full for the second operation, if indeed he is liable for leaving something behind in your moms hip which is "res ipsa loquitur" - the thing speaks for itself.
