i was driving along the underpass with a Serena in front of me. Just when the Serena reached the bottom most part of the underpass, biglang hard brake; it seemed like from 60 - 20kph sya in 1-2 seconds. a few more inches e na rear end ko na sya. kaya pala nagbebrake, me lubak pala -- which wasn't really that big -- na dinadaanan.

so let me get this straight: mas preferrable na mag hard brake ka at each lubak you see, para iwas damage sa ilalim, at the risk of getting rear-ended?

It would be much wiser not to follow too close, give an ample clearance for sudden braking instances.

Kahit na slow moving traffic, di natin calculated ang sudden moves, not just braking procedures.

if you're afraid of hitting the vehicle in front of you in case that vehicle makes a sudden and rapid deceleration, you're following too close.

whether dahil sa lubak or dahil biglang may tumawid na bata, the driver of the vehicle at the rear would be more at fault in a rear-ender

well, sa mga nabasa ko noon regarding driving, dapt daw me must follow the 3 seconds rule, i.e. we must have at least 3 seconds separation so we can have ample time to react to the actions of the drivers in front of us. night time driving requires more distance than in daytime.
    better safe than sorry.

    Regarding the question about braking:

As much as possible just try to keep a steady pace so that your vehicle will just 'glide' over the road irregularity.

Braking will only cause you vehicle's weight to shift to the front and the impact of the pothole will be greater and more stressful to your front suspension than if you just decided to run over the damn thing.

yeah tama si ungas. dapat hindi ka masyadong malapit sa car in front of you. give ample space for braking and the like...and if ever you rear-ended nga the serena..lalabas na mali mo pa kasi pwede nyang sabihin na nag-ta-tailgate ka na..

so ingat na lang lagi :D

i remembered my experience sa north express way a few months back.. siguro more than 20 - 30 meters ang agwat namin nung crosswind, nasa harap ko siya. night time yun, around 8pm siguro, ok naman ang takbo tuloy tuloy, i was running at around 100 - 120 kph

tapos biglang nakared yung break light ng crosswind, i slowed down, tapos palapit ako ng palapit taka ako bat d siya umaandar, hanggang sa full apak ako sa break skid ako mga 2 meters siguro... i was expecting kasi na tatakbo na siya by the time lapit ako sa kanya

yun pala, yung road uneven, biglang umangat ng mga 2 to 3 inches siguro, tapos ayaw niyang daanan agad. haay nakuu ewan ko nalang nag full stop sa gitna ng express way ba naman...

sheesh...I just remembered...there was this a**hole in mindanao ave. It was a green light. take note: "no left turn" na sa mindanao and congressional ave crossing. I stopped in front of the b****, brought down my window and pointed to the no left turn sign. It was a souped up Galant...geez, I didn't get the plate number...I just wished I went down and confronted the driver. But then, images of being shot in the middle of the street hit me. hehe so I just went on and left the guy stupified. :D

Some time ago I also had to brake hard because a car suddenly slowed down in front of me (nasa NLEX ako). The funny thing was, aside from looking in front, my automatic reaction was to look at my rear view mirror. True enough, another car was behind me braking hard too. Since I saw him, I did not stop immediately; umabante pa ako to the point I was almost touching the one in front. I did this to give the driver behind me time to stop. Buti na lang it was enough so as walang chain bangga kami!

Lesson: when braking hard, the hazard is not only in front; chances are there will be one apporaching behind!

OT pala. hehe just beefing out. going back to the topic. better keep yourself at least 1 car distance when braking. And of course, anticipate the holes and humps. This shouldn't be the problem when your passing through the same place everyday.

NLEX is still not yet finished and has potholes even before you reach the entry tollgate. I do not agree with people who act as if it was otherwise. only the road beyond the malinta exit is ok.

Tama si Dieseler, pag may nag sudden stop sa harap nyo, you guys should also learn to look at your mirrors both rear view and side. Para maiwasan ang multiple collision accidents. If you can leave the lane with the little amount of time given, do so.

Most of the multiple collissions happen on expressways. It would be wiser to use the shoulders in sudden cases.

Correct. I think ang old rule (turo sakin ng driver nung bata pa ko decades ago:D :D :D ) "For every 10km/hr speed, 1 car length dapat ang layo nung sa harap mo"(60km/hr=6 carlengths). Napakasafe na siguro nito.
