it's not a question of if but of when... the marikina valley fault system is already overdue for a major movement according to studies conducted by phivolcs... that's why they gave the time frame of "anytime"...

so i agree that phivolcs was merely stating a fact with their press release... they are first and foremost a scientific research agency so that their finding should be shielded from the undue influence of political and economic considerations...

earthquake prediction is not an exact science but you can considerably lessen the uncertainty by field studies, data analysis/interpretation as well as historical retrospection...

    artpogi,

the problem kasi is people look at warnings given by scientist as something that will happen today or tomorrow, but probably never will and therefore just but a waste of time and money. but maybe people should look at it another way. ikaw na din nagsabi e, "national disaster coordinating council".

what if we look at it as a guide to making our building codes more strict? what if we prepared, by making sure that our disaster response plans and logistics are in place? what if we coordinate our agencies in government now to be able to respond to such a situation if need be? what if we start earthquake survival training in our schools now so that the situation in nueva ecija where students were pinned in the collapsed school building will not happen again, or at least minimized? what if we inspect our buildings now, especially the schools and hospitals so that those that will be found inadequate will be condemned and thereby not become tombs of our children?

instead of panic, people should learn to be more prudent and prepare for what may be inevitable. now if there are people out there who have the habit of running around like headless chickens, i don't think you can fault philvocs for that. that is unfair, they are just doing their jobs.

btw, did you not notice? the reason we are talking about this now is because we, tsikot people, are responsible people and will possibly take steps to protect our families. we will not house our loved ones in a place most likely to suffer a landslide, we will check our houses if there are cracks, we will even check the garage in case our precious cars get damage should something fall.

now don't you think we should be thanking philvocs, just in case the earthquake happens in our lifetime and we have been prepared because of their warning?

I got this e-mail about the "triangle of life" which you may want to share with your loved ones (especially kids).

It involves their findings that during an earthquake, one should stay beside something like a chair, foot of the bed instead of under something where one can be crushed.

The cushioning effect of the object beside you may save ones life rather than be under that object and get crushed with it.

Likewise, use of the stairs which is structurally unstable during earthquakes should also be avoided. The same for staying by the doors frame where one can be cut in half should that support collapse.

Wanna see the future map of the world?

As for Asia, here's what the guy says:

    ------------------------------------------------------
"The Ring of Fire that passes through Asia is a highly seismic area, and as a result will experience the most active and severe Earth changes in this region.

Land will be inundated from the Philippines to Japan, and north to the Bering Sea, including the Kuril and Sakhalin Islands. As the Pacific Plate shifts its position some nine degrees, the islands of Japan will sink, leaving a few small islands. Taiwan and most of Korea will be lost to the sea.

With the shifting of the plate, the coastal region of China will be pushed inland hundreds of miles.

Indonesia will break up, although some islands will remain and new land will rise. The Philippines will disappear beneath the sea.

Asia will lose a significant amount of its land mass through these changes, yet new land will be born."
    -------------------------------------------------------

I hate those words, but my limited knowledge in geography says it is not impossible. The Philippine Deep may only be waiting for the right moment. But the good news, i think is that the changes could last a thousand years. :D

    TEN TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY:

    1) Most everyone who simply "ducks and covers" WHEN BUILDINGS COLLAPSE are
crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are crushed.

    2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You
should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct. You can
survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a
large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

    3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an
earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake.

If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created.

Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick
buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but
less squashed bodies than concrete slabs.

    4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply roll off
the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can achieve a much
greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the back of
the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor, next to the
bottom of the bed during an earthquake.

    5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out the door
or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, or
    large chair.

    6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is killed.

How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or backward,
you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the doorjamb falls sideways, you
will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed!

    7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different "moment of frequency"
(they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and
remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural
failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they fail
are chopped up by the stair treads - horribly mutilated.

Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are
a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not
collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing
people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the
    building is not damaged.

    8) Get near the outer walls of buildings or outside of them if possible. It is
much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The
farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater
the probability that your escape route will be blocked.

    9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in an
earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with the
slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the San Francisco
earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could
have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles.
Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their
cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high
next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them.

    10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices and other
offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large voids are found
    surrounding stacks of paper.

Sa tingin ko rin exaggeration lang yan. Ang daming land nawala at konti lang umangat. Kung nangyari nga iyan, hindi rin naman biglaan. It'll be little by little in a course of thousands of years. By the time this happens, meron na tayong colony sa Titan (Jupiter) or Space stations the size of megamall orbiting Earth.

Just don't believe everything you read... As theveed said, there is no scientific method to predict if an earthquake is about to come. Japan conducted the survey in the Manila but they couldn't even detect the big earthquake that hit them... If it comes, then so it be it. Bahala na si GOD :D

That's a wish we all have.

But land movement measured in the thousands of years is equal to meters, not kilometers... it still takes a few million years for movement on that scale to occur.

hehehe, there was just an intensity 5.2 quake registered this morning, 120 km offshore zambales.

first there was this 5.0 quake centered somewhere between manila and mindoro (tagaytay fault ba yun?) last month, then the quakes in japan, then the quake this morning. saan kaya ang next? marikina fault?
