The SkyActiv transmission is a first in itself as it is kinda "hybrid" meaning it still uses torque converter for shifting. However built also inside the torque converter is a clutch type system that provides a good lock once the speed and gear are properly synchronized and engaged.
I have to admit the advantage of the CVT I'm terms of efficiency because it maintains the proper ratio almost all the time with reference to torque and speed. However, yeah maintenance and durability issues are to be considered. And that odd tranny feel, meaning the so called "droning"? You may get use to it but it really really doesn't have that "feel" of a performance car.
