I am scheduled to do a test drive a Carens CDRi (AT) this coming November 2007. The dealer is from Kia Greenhills. It will be loaded with 4 adults and 2 children. I will drive it slightly uphill and winding road on C3. I prefer MT mainly because of its maintenance (Transmission) against AT (not that easy and very expenssive) if ever failed. Also traffic is really a mess in our area where AT will be a plus for both my wife and daughter. I'll let you know what happens.
By the way, will it not be much if I use an 18" wheel or too heavy for the engine? Well, normally 16" average for city driving but 18" means more mileage on highways but heavier on traffic.
Best to deal FC, Gear Lifespan, and brake system is to keep your cool on the road. Use your gas pedal wisely meaning study the momentum of your car u can feel it. Imagine trying to lift a heavy object in a rush rather than in a controlled and a very ergonomic stance. Which one you need more effort (strength/fuel)? It is very similar with a car.
K guys . . .
Keep it at 16 or 17... 18" wheels are a big compromise in ride comfort and fuel economy.
But it seems the Carens' local wheels are undersized... the last Carens we tested had a very inaccurate speedometer...

We're really keen on getting a diesel carens with m/t. It's only available with the LX. What's the difference between the LX and EX?
Has anyone seen the official Kia phils website? I wanted to see there the difference between the 2 models but I didn't find any info aside from the price. I did see that it comes with an Infinity sound system, crusie control "electronic chromic mirror" and heated seats. I wonder if the local version has the same. Thanks tsikoteers!
The difference is in trim and accessories... alarm, roof rack, foglights, airbag (but still no ABS, which should come first)... if you can afford the high end model, it's probably worth the money.
We don't have heated seats here... our local model is kind of bare compared to the US model, which is how Kia manages to sell it at a good price.

If you're going to do a lot of out of town trips or if you load your Carens often (with people and/or cargo), I'd suggest you go with the 17s. Choose a wheel design that'll fool others into thinking you got a wheel bigger than 17. If you're doing those mentioned occasionally, then you can try the 18s. A 45 series 18" tire can fit.
What I've been hearing (in this thread) is that they won't install foglamps and such in the base model at the casa.
I doubt they'll install airbags for you, either... wiring it is tricky, and it's not just the module, you need to install the airbag trigger sensors in the front of the vehicle.
The CRDi has enough power so that the 4-speed auto isn't a problem (although it can be reluctant, sometimes)... besides, the 6-speed makes it so tempting to stomp hard on the pedal (squeeeee), that you could probably roast your clutch in a month.![]()
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
I have been reading this thread and find mostly the "PROS" of a Carens.
Are there any "CONS" for this highly recommended vehicle?
Please share us your 'unsatisfaction' before I finally buy one.
I'm not an onwer, but I'm not satisfied with the tires and the lack of ABS.
But that's because my test-driving includes some pretty hard acceleration, braking and cornering tests. (I'm posting the review of the Carens next week).
For normal, everyday use, it's a fine vehicle. Low ground clearance is probably the only concern worth noting, but it's not a problem in daily use, unless your daily use includes trips up the slope of Pinatubo.

i'm very seriously considering the ex crdi at. just a couple of questions for owners out there.
1 - from which dealer did you get your unit from?
2 - how much did you spend for the first servicing of your unit after 5000kms?
3 - what's your fuel consumption?
4- any initial issues with the vehicle? servicing issues? (my biggest issue for now)
5 - any sales/service centers i should avoid?
i'm sold on the vehicle of course but like niky, i'm a little disappointed with her having no abs or stability control (versus those in the us or europe). but come to think of it, i've never tried abs anyways and since i'm quite light-footed, i guess it doesn't really matter much.
i just need something that'll get me from a to b to c in comfort and one that won't burn my wallet on fuel costs....
share ko lang itong mga videos i saw on youtube.

I just got my Kia Carens LX A/T CRDI two days ago. Except for the very limited cargo space if the third seats are used, I'm satisfied with it so far. Tomorrow or Saturday, I'll drive her to Subic.
I have started reading this thread from page 1. Nasa page 4 pa lang ako.
 3335
yup, cargo space is indeed very limited...
sarap drive nyan sa subic, leisurely drive tahimik...
i drove my Carens to Baguio two weeks ago, 7 Adults, 2 kids, 1 infant...plus all the luggage for a 3 day stay and all the pasalubongs on the way down...
so far ok naman, even on those steep, 45 degree uphill climbs...
thanks JuneT for your reply to my questions!
follow on question on the ground clearance. are you saying sumasayad siya talaga? the front lip? or somewhere between the front and rear tires?
if its the front lip, then i suppose there are certain inclines, declines, speed bumps that you have to pay close attention to, right?
if i base my opinion on the one of the videos above, i think the explanation for the seemingly low ground clearance is the "hip point" when the passenger is in the car.
siguro kung accessories, palit mags na lang siguro. notice in the video, 17" wheels standard nila. dito 16" lang. oh well....
