sir yung thermostat mo ok pa ba? remove or replace the thermostat...nung ginawa ba radiator ay lininis ang mga cooling fins using sosa and power spray? it will help IMO...
by the way tignan mo rin ang radiator kung hindi bumubulwak ang tubig pag naka idle ka if bumubulwak its a worn out head gasket or worst cylinder head...
4JA1 - very reliable, easy to maintain, matibay, and fuel frugal diesel engine. Had one with my 92 Isuzu LS Pick-up with 281,000+ kilometers in it. Normal na usok lang from exhaust and the smell is like normal although yes compare sa ibang engine namin medyo (iba ang amoy, but still amoy diesel pa din). Almost 70% of the parts in my pick-up are still the original parts when it was bought brand new way back in the 90s. Only problem experiencing right now is this:
1. It is somewhat shakey (maalog) especially pag naka-ON ang A/C. Sa lower idle speed nya the car starts to vibrate abot sa cabin and yes noon malakas. At first I thought engine supports, but then we had it fixed with the help of our mechanic na may ganon din na sasakyan, nilinis lang pala yung Air Filter kasi madumi na even konting lumot meron na plus nilinis din also yung Fuel Pump because may tubig na daw i don't know gaano kadami. It went back to normal again, hindi na maalog sa kahit anong idle speed range and we were able to bring down the idle speed to normal which is 850 rpm. The only thing is it's starting to rattle now again pero very very minimal lang and very very weak na rattle lang pero syempre lahat naman tayo metikuloso sa sasakyan natin diba?i'll have it checked nalang again (the fuel pump) and I will try to clean the air filter again this time and maybe change it next week. We'll see the difference kung andoon talaga. But then if hindi pa din mawala ang rattle/vibration sa paglilinis ng air filter and fuel pump, maybe I really have to check the engine supports.
Over-all this 4JA1 engine is a very reliable diesel engine. Kahit yung maikarga mo dito na fuel (by accident) ay madumi or may water or whatsoever (hindi naman maiwasan ito sa ibang gasoline stations esp sa far-flung areas), never mo ma-eexperience na masisiraan ka ng engine. Base on my experience, pupugak lang ng konti but when nasunog na yung fuel, okay na sya. Unlike some of my friend's CRDi engines, nadumihan yung fuel. Boom!
ano naman kaya problema kung paakyat, parang hirap, yung stop ka then paakyat na, so start ka sa first gear, tapos nahihirapan... ano kaya pasibleng problema... new fuel filter, new air filter, just cleaned water separator.
I also add 5ml - Shell 2T oil, Jaso FB for every liter of diesel fill, be it Petron Diesel Maxx, Shell Fuelsave, Caltex or small player diesel fuel, naging smooth ang andar lalo na sa high rpm run, parang CRDi ang andar. Very patient ang engine na ito, sa long drive, hindi siya overheat kahit traffic, medyo makupad lang talaga, umaangil na siya sa 120 kph, hanggang doon ko pa lang na-try, saglit lang yun, pero kung fitted with high speed differential, baka tumulin pa with such a small engine. Workhorse kasi intended use kaya ganoon lang speed.
Solid engine basta properly maintained... pag napabayaan pwede pa rin.. ganun yan ka tibay
from my experience and some research on the net, may dalawang transmission models fitted sa mga 4JA1. eto ay yung MUA & MSG. the MUA trans have higher gear ratios so much better ito on uphill climbs, load carrying, etc. yung company service ko non e MSG. hirap na hirap umakyat pero nakaka 140 kmh sa hiway.
Seems there was a little air inside the water separator, just bleed it and its ok after that, I remember i cleaned and replaced fuel filter, maybe i was not able to do proper bleeding that time.
Guys my ride is a xwind 2004 model tinanggal ng radiator specialist ang thermostat kasi no need na daw dito sa pilipinas kasi hot climate tayo. Anyone done this also and any inputs sa performance and FC.
Nilagay yan kasi may purpose yan. Siguro ang mas maganda tanggalin mo, yung mekaniko mo. Hehe. Ipabalik mo na lang ulit yan thermostat.

Same with mine sir. Year 1992 pa pero same engine lang non-turbo 4JA1 and yes hirap na ako umangat pa above 100kph sir be it a straight highway without kasalubong or kasunuran. Done that with the 5th gear at kahit anong sagad ko sa accelerator pedal halos hirap ng humugot pa ng speed yung makina, kita ko naman sa speedometer at RPM gauge hindi na halos tumataas. Staying between let's say 1800-2000 rpm. Di talaga siya ganon kabilis because I've driven the same road (same condition) using our non-CRDi TDi 4D56 strada at kayang kaya ko pang umabot ng around 140-150 kph eh.
Mine is medyo mausok din pero itim at may nginig din minsan (although this could be broken engine support lang or maduming fuel pump e.g. may tubig sa loob or maduming air filter; my car used to be shakey din noon but then nung pina-service ng father ko paguwi niya wala nang alog, sabi niya nilinis ng mechanic yung air filter kasi madumi na halos may lumot na and yung fuel pump because madumi na! sometimes ngayon medyo umaalog siya and maybe baka kelangan ko ng palitan fuel pump and air filter but it's just that na inayos sa akin wala na alog)...
Base on my experience~
a. Battery Indicator - Yung sinasabi na I.C. sa alternator. I think it's the most sensitive part of the alternator eh and I don't know sa ibang place ha but dito sa amin yung mga nagbebenta ng ganyang parts ay may "No Return Policy". It's either you get a good I.C. or a defective one. I don't know bakit ganon. I had mine changed few months ago, mabuti it was a good buy pero same lang tayo every startup ko especially sa umaga (first start-up) always nag-aappear yung battery indicator pero nawawala when I rev up the engine. But be reminded na if hindi pa din nawala kahit anong rev up mo, alternator na may problema, hindi na siya nagchacharge. Or baka grounded connection ng indicator pwede rin so it keeps on showing up.
b. Oil Indicator - base on my experience, nag-aappear yung ganon sa akin na matagal and kelangan pa i-rev up (just like that battery indicator problem) nung time na hindi ko namalayan yung engine oil ko konting konti na lang pala (those times na may leak sa oil seal ng engine ko and transmission so unti-unting nauubos yung engine oil). I also took notice during those times na konting konti nalang engine oil ko, pag mabilis takbo ko and then magmemenor ako to turn to a road in my side (whether left or right) nag-aappear for a split second yung oil indicatorbut then kahit na konti nalang engine oil ko nung time na yun, hindi man lang nag-overheat yung engine or uminit na katumbas ng init ng ibang engine during normal usage good condition.
