    AFAIK, the diesel engine may have a slightly higher consumption or the same consumption (in km per liter) as its gasoline counterpart. What makes the diesel engine economical is its running cost (in km per peso) since diesel is a lot more cheaper than gasoline.
    Diesel by nature is much more energy-dense than gasoline. Ergo, modern diesels are usually more economical than their gasoline counterparts. Heck, diesel even produces less CO2 than gasoline---important in countries like the UK because they get taxed for CO2 emissions.

    You obviously have not been reading any European car magazines or websites...

    Fuel Consumption:
    -City: 20 mpg (8.5 km/L)
    -Highway: 30* mpg (12.7 km/L)
    -Mixed: 24 mpg (10.2km/L) with ~60% city driving daily
    -Using 87 unleaded gasoline

    *Confirmed during 2 road trips using cruise control ~70% of the time.
