September 29th, 2009 11:10 PM #1I have 2000 Honda Accord, 2.0 li. Vtec, lower series, odometer at 95,000 km. I have this car since January 2009, and used it from Manila to Baguio and about every other week since then. Two months ago, I started having problem in the A/T like some kind of slippage when engaging from start, and getting worst while driving disengaging.
So, the unit was brought to a casa. After some tests, it was diagnosed that slippage was severe, recomended to undergo total repair, sort of requiring a rebuilding kit among others. The repair job would cost about Ph 75,000, a lot of money for a 9 year old car. I browsed the internet, and found out lots of complains in the US on apparently similar problem in the A/T, and if I recall a class suit was filed.
Onetime, on my way back from Mla to Bgo, I stopped in one of the gas stations to check on the ATF. I used a flashlight and noticed the ATF was bubbling, say boiling. So I allowed it to cool down abit, and did extra controlled driving all the way to Manila. I brought the car to a certain A/T expert to save money. Considering my background, I ordered the shop to install a separate ATF 6"x14" cooler installed infront of radiator, disabling the original cooling syatem using the radiator bottom part, other than new rebulding kit. Bought the used cooler from Banawe for Ph 1000, and total cost was half the casa price.
Car after repair and with the new cooler, works well like new for the past two months. Did I do the right thing? Why were there so many complains on Honda Accord A/t problems in the US. What was done to correct these problems?
P.S. - One casa took a picture of what i did on the A/T cooler.

Old Honda ATs are real dogs...
As to your solution... an extra ATF cooler is usually beneficial... especially given our climate.

Welcome to Honda.
You are right. When it comes to auto tranny on a Honda they are crappy they are way behind compare to other Japanese car like toyota. I am a Honda believer when it comes to engine performance as I myself also a honda owner. When I bought my 05 accord v-6, I am aware the problem on accord tranny so I decided to have the 6-speed manual. Oh boy! this car was so much fun to drive and believe me it could kick some butt on the street or highway....well sort off.
People here they dont give a damn if crappy or not on the Honda, they just keep buying on it. I guess the protection are the people looking on it plus Honda been around like 40 yrs now in the U.S. Enought reputation from company to makes people love it... like me. Warranty: mined is 100.000 miles or 10 yrs. bumper to bumper warranty which ever came first.Last edited by v6dreamer; September 30th, 2009 at 05:02 AM.

September 30th, 2009 10:35 AM #5Hi! I bought the surplus oil cooler from Banawe, and there are many of them of various sizes. It was at my insistence to install the oil cooler other than the rebuilding kit required by the shop. The shop owner said that Mercedez Benz has/had somekind of a set-up. The shop is located along visayas avenue, Q.C. I am bit worried on what I did over the normal A/T repair method.

If any damage has occured from the overheating of your transmission... it will fail, eventually... but the ATF cooler should prolong its life... and when you replace or repair it (if it's not under warranty... just have it hauled at an outside shop... Speedlab has done a few Accord trannies before), the cooler will prolong the life of your next transmission.
