Same thing with MB hood stars. I'm on my third star, others have suggested sharpening the "spokes" since it's not obvious to the untrained eye. If the thief grabs it and cuts himself he might even go berserk on the rest of the car and ruin the whole thing. I'd rather they take out the star and leave the car alone. Same thing with side mirrors.

I have power mirrors and even when I had manual never touched the part where the blade would be placed. Even if they actually get the mirror at least I'll know that I drew blood before they got it.
