Benefit of the doubt na lang talaga. Isipin niyo na lang na what if kayo or kamag anak niyo ang sakay ng ambulance. But yes, I've seen my fair share of abusive ones as well.

Just let KARMA decide on those drivers.

James Deakin once tailed an ambulance in full whack just to see if it was really carrying a patient. When it went into a residential area, he surmised that it will pick up a patient. From a distance he observed, yes the ambulance was indeed carrying a patient, and it was burnt to a crisp daw.

I was able to ride the ambulance of doc otep. Very responsible driver si doc otep. Slows down at intersections and short taps his horn (not siren) so that on coming cars would notice him.

Pero i know nakakainis nga yung mga irresponsible or abusive ambulance drivers. But i just let them pass. Hindi kasi natin alam if may emergency ba talaga sila.

yep menor muna.. the ambulance can't just take a lane.. he has to wait na ibigay sa kanya voluntarily.

Well, especially here in the Philippines. It seems the ambulance had its lights (and I'm presuming his sirens) on, and yet the jeepney went on with his business, paying no mind to the counter-flowing emergency vehicle. In this instance, sana nga lechon lang ang idedeliver ng ambulance driver para wala sanang nasaktan kung di siya.

In the US and other countries with more disciplined drivers, I do believe with the racket the ambulance is causing, you would take heed and slow down to give way.

Oh, btw, may ganyan din sa States! Well, not as irresponsible as that naman. There was this ambulance going down a 4 lane avenue with his sirens and lights blazing. When he got stuck coz there was a car at the intersection, he turned his sirens off until he was given way. When he got thru, he then parked at the nearby Chevron station. Not to have a top up, apparently, because he was just parked at the side of service station. What he was in a hurry for, I don't know.

Akala ko ako lang nakakapansin ng ambulance na parang may schedule na sinusunod

Dami nyan lalo na sa macapagal ave pag umaga. Mostly ambulances from cavite, esp dasma palagi kong nakakasabay 8ish in the morning.

I also encountered a privately driven scooter escorting a private vehicle in quirino ave. pque. he was directing vehicles to stop and give way to the vehicle. When i asked the police manning the checkpoint near st paul pque if it is legal to do that. The answer was "sorry di namin napansin". Baka konsehal or bgy official pag congressman or mayor na kasi pulis na ang escort heheheheheh

i have always believed that ambulances have no rights.. only privileges. that statement translates to, they have to wait for the other vehicles to give them right of way. they may not bully their way thru.
and the fact that the patient is in an ambulance, means he is stable enough for the trip. and except for truly life-and-death situations, which, i believe, are quite rare, no decent hospital will allow the patient an ambulance trip if he is in danger of dying along the way..
so, to the ambulance drivers out there... there is no logic in attempting to save a life, by putting other innocent lives at peril.

Being in the ambulance field since 2007, I just tend to give these guys the benefit of the doubt. True enough, even in the area where we operate, there are some rotten apples but I tend not to pre-judge anymore.

Here are some of the more common complaints I hear from motorists regarding ambulances. If you have any more, I'll try to answer them the best I could.

    1. Ambulance is driving code 3 with no patient inside:
***Lots of people actually now know how to call an ambulance in an emergency. And yes we do respond to those calls. Here is our most recent emergency quick response (EQR). Patient was subsequently removed from the third floor storey of their residence and transported to the hospital:

***Sometimes I just need to haul myself to the patient especially ones with airway emergencies. And I have been trained and have sufficient experience in operating emergency vehicles. And the reality of life is some doctors do drive ambulances. Nothing against the Chevy Sparks that the other ambulance service uses to transport their doctors but I'm just not feeling it. I'd still rather drive the box.

***Clients also acquire our services to transport human organs, specialized drugs (not the illegal kind), and specialized hospital equipment that are needed on a 'now' basis to cover for stock depletion or sudden machine failure.

    2. Ambulance driving through traffic code 3 turns into the street and turns off all lights and sirens and stops:
***With the current EMS system still not very unified, we do have a tendency of multiple units responding to a single case broadcast over the 2-way radio. At least its better than zero units responding. However, once a unit has arrived on scene, other units have the option to pull over and wait it out. If the unit on scene does not request for assistance, then other units are no longer required to arrive on scene and most will return to base.

    Some photos.
    1. Jeepney driver claims he could not hear the sirens or see the lights. Suddenly turned left and collided with our ambulance. Ambulance just came from a house call and was transporting the patient to the ER.

    2. Cyclist also claimed not to hear the siren or see the lights of our biggest fire truck. In an effort to avoid the blind/deaf cyclist, our fire truck collided with a passenger jeepney head-on. Fire truck was responding to a fire call.

    OT:

    Our fleet:

Our latest unit (Inso Alpha) prior to load in of medical equipment:

    Some units have dash cams:

Still, one of my biggest pet peeve are ambulance drivers who still insist on using the hazard lamps (4 way flashers) when they are driving with lights and sirens. Four way flashers are used only when the ambulance is stationary or running at a very low rate of speed compared to traffic around it. Even with lights and sirens, you are still supposed to signal your intention to turn and wait for the correct opportunity to do so.

Yep, that's still a running joke here at the office. That's why our ambulances remain apolitical (walang mukha ng politician). Hehe

Is there ever a (valid) reason for an ambulance to be parked in a mall?

Saw this one at Robinsons last Monday:

It depends. In the case of my own ambulance, I take to the mall, to the office, the clinic and other official and personal errands. Since I like having all the gear with me in case we get a call or encounter a mishap on the road.

I don't use government ambulances for personal matters even if we are given free access to them.

Nagshopping lang muna yung pasiente Likely hood the ambulance got into the mall with blazing sirens and all lights flashing. I've seen such case at Trinoma even counter flowing along Mindanao Ave. Ambulance from the city of Valenzuela and to make the story more interesting, the MMDA manning the intersection of North & Mindanao Ave even stopped all vehicles in that crossing just to give way to the stupid ambulance.
