Buses to have black boxes - DOTC
By Dennis Carcamo (philstar.com) Updated August 27, 2009 03:37 PM

MANILA, Philippines -- All passenger buses nationwide will be required to have black boxes or speed regulators to avoid fatal accidents in the future, the Department Transportation and Communications (DOTC) said today (Aug. 27).

"This is to protect them (drivers) also and the riding public," DOTC Secretary Leandro Mendoza said after meeting with bus operators this afternoon. "The black box will inform the office of the bus operator when a driver is overspeeding."

He noted that blackboxes have already been used by large trucking companies to monitor their shipments.

Aside from the gadget, Mendoza said they will be deploying traffic personnel in strategic areas in major thoroughfares to conduct random drug and alcohol testing.
I dont think this is effective. Blackboxes dont control/dictate drivers' judgement.

^ So true. Overspeeding is just one of a dozen other infractions bus drivers commit everyday; swerving, overstaying at bus stops, stopping to pick up passengers in the middle lane.. just to name a few.

Adding traffic cameras and installing speed cameras (with competent people or AI manning them) would probably be a tad more helpful.

Do you heard the news??? lalagyan na daw ng GPS yung mga bus para makita yung speed and biglang liko ng mga bus na yun ang nagiging dahilan ng accidents. bakit hindi na lang electric chair ilagay nila sa bus para pag nag over speed and biglang kabig ang bus makukuryente yung driver:evillaugh:evillaugh

Still it will NOT prevent accidents. If true, this is helpful AFTER such incidents. And who will shoulder the cost, the operators?
Kung fixed salary nga ng mga drayber at konduktor nila hindi nila maibigay, yung pa kaya P20,000+ GPS unit per bus plus subscription fees.

IMO, buses should have a scheduled arrival and departure time (just like in other countries like Japan, Singapore, etc.). Those drivers should just get another job. If they are really "madiskarte", show their skills in a different profession. Itong LTFRB din naman kasi, approve lang nang approve ng franchise applications. Eh nagkukumahog na nga sa sikip mga bus sa EDSA. Palibhasa they're just after their selfish interest.

Heard over the news that the goverment will introduce a tougher one-strike policy. A PUV driver involved in accident will automatically be suspended, pending an investigation. If it is proven if it is the PUV driver's fault, his driver license will be revoked or something like that...

I think they've done this before... may makikita kang lalagyan ng camera sa mga poste sa EDSA, lalo ng yung sa MMDA na main office nila. Laglayan na lang natira, wala na yung cameras. As usual, ninakaw na...

Still, they're risking lives of the passengers. Kung buhay ng pamilya nila ang iniisip nila isipin din nila yung sakay.

Dapat sa mga yan, sunugin kasama ung mga bus nila. Including the operators.

Maybe they can fit these buses's blackboxes to also have acceleration limiters as well.

Malabo mangyari though, given you'll have to retrofit thousands of the old buses which aren't even maintained properly. I saw a few weeks ago isang bus na namatayan habang nag y-youturn sa may gateway/edsa. The traffic definitely wasn't pretty.
