Perhaps my post wasn't clear. Sorry about that.

Let me clarify that I adore old people. They've got a lot of stories to tell and they tolerate me (I sometimes tend to have a lot of questions and at times, a smart ass). One of my mentors is an old Spaniard priest, who used to be my professor at UP Diliman. All the advices he gave me, turned out to be right, especially those that I did not heed because I'm hardheaded.

10yrs ago, while still in college, he advised me who to marry. As fate would have it, I was able to indirectly follow his advice. Today, I'm a happily married man to a wonderful lady.

I like hearing their stories because they've been in time where I'll never be.

Anyway, I have an 84yo granny. She confided to me once that she doesn't like the feeling that she's a burden (which she isn't). She'd walk for kilometers upon kilometers in the province meeting her friends and one time, she told me she can't really see faces clearly anymore. That sometimes, I'd hear that she got hospitalized because she bumped into something or stepped on broken glass. We've told her time and time again to just stay at home because she'll be safer there - to no avail.

I asked her to fly to Manila. Had her eyes checked. Miracles of miracles, after more than 10yrs of her cataract, it still haven't developed into glaucoma (hardening of the eyes or something). Asked the doctor how much it would cost for her to get the best treatment, was quoted a hundred grand. Doctor gave us some discounts and, after just 2 weeks (two eyes), she doesn't need glasses to see. She can now read newspapers, fine print, labels etc. Best of all, she can see all of us.

She asked how she can pay us back (me and my wife) and we cheerfully told her that all she has to do is live to at least 100. Of course, that is wishful thinking, I know.

Deep inside her, I know she wants to visit her hometown in Negros where my dad was born but I still haven't had the time to arrange it yet because of course, we'll have to fly the whole gang there and not just her.

    Mukhang KSP talaga no?

Another peeve of mine are those drivers who drive too fast in a parking lot, unmindful that there may be people (and kids!) walking about.

OT: Nice to see that your grandlola is still up and about. My lolo and lola (both in their 80s) are either too weak or have advanced Alzheimer's already; nakaka-miss na rin sila. But we do all give our fair share in taking care of them as they did for us when we were all kids.

Same here bros. I like talking to old people. I like hearing stories from them and how they survived WWII.

If they want to sing Leron Leron Sinta, Planting Rice, Bourney's Serenade, Negritos of the Mountain,- I'll gladly sing with them,- many many times over....

Moreso, they give me insights that I would not be considering these days. Experience indeed is awesome!

Those drivers probably have no children and/or have not had experienced parental care as a kid.

AD is a sad situation because they are there but they aren't. I used to think that it's just a white man's disease but docus about it enlightened me about its prevalence in our country. I realized that maybe what people call "ulyanin" or "bumabalik sa pagkabata" actually are victims of AD.

I'm always praying for my lola's health. At 84, she's not taking any maintenance meds. I hope that by the time I reach 80s too, ganun din ako.

Yeah, this is where experience really is hard to beat. We may read or hear what it's like during WW2 but we will never know the details only those who were there experienced. Like the smell of the morning, the scent of fear that made them transfer from town to town. Articulate old people are good at reliving those moments for us to fully grasp what it's like.

Add to that, just when you're about to reach the tail end of a stopped vehicle, gradually stepping lower and lower on the brakes, tapos biglang meron mag-ccut sa harap mong moto-idiot.

With the rains now and the way they ride, tignan lang natin ano magagawa nila if they have to do a sudden stop and maneuver.

Bad motoring etiquette: What you hate the most.
