They were banned because cheaply installed ones (stuck onto the trunk instead of properly braced) can fly off... theoretically... I doubt it's ever happened.

Some guys I know who do track duty in their FF cars have wings, but they're balanced by front end air-splitters. These are usually balsa board, fiberglass, carbon-fiber or polyurethane air effects trays under the front bumper. They aid traction in front and help concentrate air going in through the bumper grilles into the radiator. But splitters and wings have to be well balanced, or the car will scrape the ground at high speeds.

Modern aerodynamics now emphasize the underside of the car, so instead of putting wings, downforce can still be created discreetly under the car without the cosmetic value. Perhaps what FF cars need is an front underspoiler.

RWD/4WD benefit from rear spoilers because during acceleration, power is usually transmitted/biased to the rear so the rear wheels need more traction and stability. That's why top-of-the-line Evos and Skylines have rear wings, rear diffusers, and even shark fins.

track time, yes... 400 horses, not really. LIke I've said, those who have slightly modified FF cars (150-200 hp) do use wings and front undertrays to great effect on track.

But on the road, it's almost utterly useless, as you'll never be in a situation where you need thatmuch downforce. You'd be going too fast.
