have noticed this for most of my life, and i just don't get it.

i see this very predominantly in the US, but i think you guys see it in the Philippines too - Ford drivers hate Chevy, Toyota drivers hate Honda hates Nissan...etc. nakita nyo ba yung mga stickers with a cartoon of Calvin (of Calvin & Hobbes) pissing on a Honda/Toyota/GM/Nissan/Ford logo? kakatuwa.

but why is it if you buy a Chevy you're automatically expected to hate the blue oval, and if your car has an "H" you have to go out and beat all cars with a "T" in a street race?

    is it friendly competition?

do some people need to feel good (and superior) about the type of car they bought?

o baka wala lang magawa sa buhay ang ibang tao so they invent some kind of arch-enemy?

i'm sure the automakers love it because they build a cult following of loyal buyers - for example, my coworker has had Mustangs in his family for three generations...he gets really mad when i refer to them as "Rustangs" :bwahaha:

I guess human nature ang magpatalbugan at magpayabangan, di lang ng sasakyan kundi sa lahat ng bagay, pati pagkatao.

For the car manufacturers and dealers, brand loyalty is a big sales boost. In the advertising world, this is called 'branding strategy'.

    agree agree ako dyaan!!!

well, in a car enthusiast point of view it depends. Ako, it depends on the car if I like it or not. Usually I base it on experience. I hate the Alterra because of what I experienced about it. I love the Vios so much even other people dislike it. There are a lot of factors.

Kaya wag mapipikon if others hate your car or what. hehehehe

it's not the 'other brands' that i hate, its the people who make annoying comments on my cars like "bakit crv binili mo mas maganda 'daw' yung rav4 at hindi matagtag, hindi matakaw sa gaso, etc.,etc.?" and knowing that they don't have that first-hand experience with the rav4, it totally pisses me off

true...honestly, my father HATES my new-2nd hand lite-ace...because of ITS 2C ENGINE.... knowing him, nadinig lang nya kung sinu-sinong non-owners ng sasakyang may 2C....kaya sinusumpa nya itong van ko....

ako din noon, reluctant ako sa 2C, because ung pagkamausok at underpowered ng FX-diesel dito...ang kilala ko lang brands noon ay mitsubishi(kaya ako nagka-delica) at nissan...until i had this, nagulat pa nga ako may ECU pa to! actually, second to the last choice ko ito, jdm 4wd-diesel spacewagon or vanette sana, pero di kaya ng budget,e....

maarte ako sa car, i want it the way i want it...pero di ako brand concious, concious lang ako sa amenities, comfort and maintenance of a vehicle...

i dont care kung napapangitan sila sa liteace at lugi daw ako dito...bakit, sila ba nagddryb?

109, I know what you mean. Ang dami kong classmates/schoolmates na ganyan. Any car you buy lagi silang may comment. As if they know what they're talking about. I hear them saying random stuff that aren't even true.

Example: "Bakit CR-V kinuha mo eh masmaluwag naman yung Rav 4"

i get how you would tend to defend the brand that you drive because you don't want to feel bad about your decision on what is probably the second-biggest purchase of your life...but some people have absolutely no objectivity whatsoever.

like my Ford friend...Explorer's transmission failed after 2 weeks, the paint failed after a month...Mustang constantly in the shop...now he has an Escape, let's see how that goes. maybe he just likes to work on cars using his spare time and money :bwahaha:

after all this, he still claims Ford is the best brand out there and my 'riceburner' (talking about my previous Civic) is underpowered crap. in the meantime, my 'underpowered crap' went 200,000 miles without any issues except a distributor replacement (plus timing belt replacement/regular maintenance)

Right on target. People would hate to admit that they spent hard-earned cash on a car that others don't see as the best. But that's pointless, because there will always be better cars than what one owns. People will always tend to be emotional rather than logical, and when people are emotional, they say things that are sometimes downright laughable.

The problem your friend has is with American designed/engineered Fords... since the Escape is a joint Ford/Mazda and is made/assembled in the Philippines with Japanese parts, he should FINALLY BE SAFE!. Bwekekekek!

My uncles are having maintenance problems with their Expeditions and Navigators... poor guys... while I'm still enjoying my "Ford" Lynx, like we enjoyed our "Ford" Laser previously.

Personally, I don't hate other brands... I should, by the definition in the original post, hate Chevy... but I don't... We've had a Chevy Monza (uck), a Chevy Caprice (yeah!) and a Chevy Camaro (*sigh*) in the family... I dislike some modern Chevys, but for reasons of reliability/engineering, and NOT because they're Chevy.

I've noticed a LOT of people "hate" Honda (being a former Nissan-man, H-bashing was all we did on the forums... but in fun)... but some people go overboard, and cannot honestly understand how good Hondas really are. "American" and "European" brand loyalists are the ones who are more likely to bash Honda or Toyota, and not often for any more significant reason than that they are "cheap". Go figure.

I personally "hate" Automotive Racism. I think we should like/dislike a vehicle on its own merits, and not based on the (increasingly) misleading badge on the trunk. I laugh at the euro-owners who dislike "japs" or "domestics"... some of the best european-engineered and european-market targetted cars are Fords (developed in Europe), Hondas and Nissans...

And anyone who hates Honda is just a damn bigot.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Yes, some hate Hondas because they tend to lead in performance, especially the EK Civic. VTEC VTi is the best, and come the DOHC SiR 2 years later, the competitors had nothing but dropped jaws. Shame because there's no answer from Toyota or Mitsu.

But I have to disagree that a Honda hater is automatically a bigot. You see, almost all car makers, if not all, have a weak link in their lineup, even the likes of BMW. If one dislikes a Honda because it sucks, then it's obviously justified. Civics are guilty of having less features that what's supposedly standard in the first place, and that's one reason why some loathe them. The current model doesn't live up to the standards of its predecessors either, somewhat a disgrace to the Civic moniker. Additionally, its true engine displacement is mysterious. True, there are many reasons to love a Civic, but there are also a handful of them to make one shy away from buying one.
