450 kg is not that light. Kung carbon fiber, that should be strong enough. a 550 kg cf F1 (and remember, most of that weight is in the huge engine and the ballast... the car would be much lighter otherwise) can enable drivers to survive crashes that would instantly squash riders in a normal car.

Given it's just a two cylinder 20hp diesel (siguro 50 kg total) and it's carbon fiber, that means it would likely weigh around 600-700 kg kung metal at kung 1.5-1.6 ang makina.

We could probably make a local version with decent crash safety (c'mon, mura lang ang rollcage ), but sourcing a modern 2-cylinder diesel would be the tough part.

Maybe if we re-invent the cycle-car? It's easy enough... Two-stroke or four-stroke thumper or twin cylinder diesel, chain driver rear wheels (or even front wheels) motorcycle rims and tires (light), aluminum tube frame (strong, light, safe) and fiberglass shells with proper aerodynamics.... you can get over 100 mpg easy and still carry three or four passengers.

i've been thinking about that locally-fabricated car for some time, but i was thinking electric. it'd never fly though -- look at norkis, they took apart a perfectly OK car and turned it into... the norkis legacy.

paano pa kaya kung build the car from scratch?

prolly the suzuki super carry. 300k is way too much for one though, i think they sell in cebu for as low as 75k (some/much repair required though). there's even a version that's 4wd and has a center diff.

When the Super Carry came in, 75k lang siya (back in the 90's). I think they still sell converted ones for around 70k, that's the jeepney conversion with three or four a side in the back. One of my acquaintances bought three for his school in the North when he went to Davao.

The Super Carry engine would be okay, but it's not that frugal for a 600cc (carb kasi, so consumption is akin to a modern 1000cc). Still, the Super Carry formula lends itself very well to DIY and hotrodding. There's shops that do micro-owner type jeeps off of a Super Carry frame and engine. With very little bodywork to haul around... it hauls a$$. :evillaugh

Cycle-cars are something Filipinos could make easily, and make well. Look at the various electric bikes, motorised bikes, kuliglig conversions, etcetera, on the road. Just teach them how to make a rigid and safe crash structure, and we'd be all set. A four wheeled Cycle-car, powered by a 150cc motorbike engine, with a six passenger (including driver) capacity would be a safer and more practical alternative to the tricycle deathtraps we have speeding along our city streets.

The only mod needed for the motorbike engine is a bigger gear for the rear wheel, to increase low-down pulling power.
