In 1980, Datsun (owned by Nissan) was a substantial player in the U.S. (and world) automobile market -- neck and neck in the U.S. with Toyota, and well ahead of Honda. Nissan decided to change the Datsun brand to Nissan. Four years and about 300 million dollars later, Nissan had fallen behind Toyota in brand share and was struggling to stay ahead of Honda.
