refers to the configuration of the cylinders. v8 or v12 means that it has 8 or 12 cylinder on a "v" format. meaning the connecting rod joining the crankshaft is in "V" shaped configuration as well as the cylinder block. this means, a more compact engine block compared to inline confiuration -thus, space saving (if you can call it that).
basically, a v6, v8 or v12 is derrived from a two: 3 cylinder , 2 4-cylinder or a 6 cylinder on each banks.
as for the w12 or w16, these configuration is derrived from 2 V6 or V8 engines joined at the crankshaft. more precisely, 2 V6 or V8's enjoined at the crankshaft.
