heavy duty = offroad, towing a trailer, daily stop and go heavy traffic (so i guess if you traverse the metropolis daily that will count), mountain roads even if paved, fully loaded daily. yung paminsan-minsan does not count, like when natratrapik ka lang pag coding ka and you go home at 7pm.

Long idling like when you're always in traffic ... dusty environment like in most of the places here ... frequent short trips (5-8 kms or less) ...

IMO.. heavy duty means, Racing, towing at least 70% of its rated capacity and 4x4 off roading.

Traffic and long idling periods is considered light load... unless, if your total Running hours exceeded 500 running hours or up to 15000 kms.

Dusty if you operating sa quarry or mine sites... or un paved roads- or the likes... pag ganyan dusty condition... recommended every week ang air filter cleaning...

I think the best guage on normal and heavy duty driving is, 15000 kms or 500 running hours... or 1 year... w/c ever comes first... hindi naman na dedegrade ang oil even after a year..

Sa kabilang banda... change oil every 9 months at mura lang naman ang oil... and also replaced air filters... or clean every week pag dusty condition.

I dont find short driving in traffic- 5-8kms to be considered heavy duty.. it gives no stress sa engines nyan... may times pa nga... at 5kms. Travel.. Possibke na hidi mo pa ma reach ang normal engine temp.... it only means... no or little engine stress... light lang yan... unless nalang if it took you several hours to traverse a 5 km. Distance.

Sa fuel palang consumed, in 5-8kms.. only 1 liter of diesel... baliwala po yan sa engine.... not even near medium to heavy duty driving.

Sa Isuzu owner manual, severe driving conditions are defined as 1) repeated short trips ... 2) rough or dusty road driving .... 3) cold weather driving ... 4) driving on salted roads ... 5) towing trailer or climbing mountain roads frequently

Frequent short trips and idling a lot are described in operating manuals as severe driving condition ... it should be described as severe driving condition instead of heavy duty driving ... most of Metro Manila is considered as dusty environment ... simplest way to find out is leave your vehicle parked outside and observe how much dust accumulates ... though there are areas that are much cleaner like Makati and BGC ...

    Let's break it down.

    1. Daily short distance driving(under 10k or 10mins or so) - engine load is minimal(correct) BUT at this point, rich ang af mixture and some fuel will mix with your oil via pcv or blowby sa rings. Include mo na water vapor trapped overnyt sa engine and all of this will contaminate your oil. A good counter is to drive your car longer say once a week para mag evaporate other contaminants sa oil.

Minsan sa racing, pag nagtitipid. We use 1500per liter worth of racing oil kasi x 5liters or so, it is recommended na you heat the oil upto 150c to boil off contaminants so you can again reuse your 100% synthetic race oil. Same logic when you drive long distances and engine oil heats up...

    2. Dusty areas as mentioned is ung rough roads na pag may kasabayan ka na oto sa harap mo maalikabok or mausok na. However, kahit you live in greenland and malinis ang paligid. LoL.

A car running at idle 900rpm will definitely have less wear and tearn against an engine running at 2500rpm..... wala kasing load... or little load...

Even on idle, your car will sooner or later will reach its normal operating temperature.... Better combustion and oil circulation etc.

Kahit na siguro we do a test one car will run on idle 900rpm for 10,000 Running hours.. against a car running cont. At 2500rpm for 10,000 running hours..

Logically, after the test yung naka idle.. is still like bnew... yung running naman for 2500rpm will have major repairs na... reasons .. the higher the rpm the higher the stress on the engine... more fuel will be consumed means more carbon will be accumulated... more Fuel consumed means more fuel burned and heat will make your engine deteriorate faster...

Yung mga super heavy duty engines... ang RPM lang nasa 900rpm meron pa nga 420rpm..... mas mabagal tumakbo mas less ang load... lesser load will have longer engine life.

Importante lang the engine will Reach its normal operating temperature for better combustion...

^^^ so bakit lahat ng heavy duty engine manuals na nabasa ko (emd, caterpillar, deteoit diesel, cummins, wartsila) sabi e avoid running on idle for long periods ???

and, experience tells me otherwise. my engines on the rigs have more carbon deposits running on idle than on full power. lalo na ang emd at detroit diesel. lagi kaya sama ng loob ng motormen ko pag naka-idle ng matagal yung emd (dc-dc power) at di siya payagan i-off ng driller kasi pahirapan maglinis ng carbon sa intake manifold. part yun ng 800H pm nya kasi.

Hindi kasi na rereach ang normal operating temp... kaya hindi maganda ang combustion... para ma reach it needs to be loaded at least 30% of its rated capacity... steady lang ang rpm... kaya pag walang load.. madaming unburned fuel... may min. Amount of fuel lang kasi kayang ilabas ng noozles nya... yung min. Na yun at 400kw nasa 10-15 liters per hour na...

Ang destroit kung tawagin namin... GRABE talaga accumulation ng carbon nyan... pati oil leak... kaya nga discountinued na production nyan paps... it wont even pass emmission standards...

Iba naman sa automotive engines variable ang speed or rpm... and kahit on idle it can reach normal operating temperature... per hr. On idle more or less 1.2 li. Lang per hour... nasusunog din mabuti yun...

Ok. Let's wrap this up na.

If your daily commute say is from qc going to subic and back to qc daily. Tipong cruising at 80-120kph wherein very little load sa engine at minimal trapik, go for 15k kms pms.

If you commute from las pinas going to qc and back to las pinas daily wherein trapik ka lagi. Go for 7.5k kms. Pms.

Anything in between, tansahin mo na lang kaya safe na rin ung 10k kms ni casa.

Regarding sa filter, start doing it daily. Again 20sec lang naman. Then, after nun, if kita mo malinis pa naman, do it weekly and then monthly na lang.
