Valentine's is still in air, heart is almost everywhere, but this time it's in a tomato sauce. Read out:

‘Rat’s heart’ found in tomato sauce! AN employee of ABS-CBN has filed a complaint before the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) against a giant manufacturing firm after discovering that he and his family have eaten the heart of a suspect rat allegedly contained in a pack of tomato sauce.

The complaint filed by Mario Bautista, of Bacoor Cavite and an employee of the ABS-CBN Bayan Foundation, is now being heard by the BFAD in Quezon City. The first hearing was conducted last Friday.

“Hanggang ngayon ay hindi pa mawala sa isip naming magpamilya, ako, asawa ko at aking mga anak, ang trauma na nakakain sila ng nasabing tomato sauce at sila pa ay naisugod pa sa ospital dahil sa pagsakit ng ulo, pagkahilo at pagsusuka,” Bautista claimed in his complaint.

Investigation showed the incident occurred last year. Bautista’s wife Marlyn was cooking spaghetti when she noticed the heart-shaped matter inside a pouch of tomato sauce which the complainant had bought from a grocery store in Imus, Cavite.

“Kahit takot ay naglakas ako ng loob na tingnan ang lalagyan ng sauce at nakita ko ang isang bagay na nasa loob ng pack. Ang bagay na ito ay mapusyaw na puti na tila goma at solido,” said Bautista.

Unknown to Bautista, his family consumed for lunch a meal which used the same suspicious tomato sauce. “At nang iniluto nya ang ulam, hindi pa niya napansin ang kakaibang bagay sa tomato sauce dahil sa ito ay kabubukas pa lamang at nasa ilalim nga ng pack ang solidong bagay na iyon,” the complainant added.

The following day, Marlyn and the children experienced stomach pains and proceeded to a hospital for treatment.

Bautista had his evidence examined by the UP Los Baños laboratory whose findings showed that the tomato sauce was indeed contaminated. In its histology report, the laboratory said, three tissue samples processed and examined showed features characteristic of the heart of a “small mammal.”

Such tissues, according to UP Los Baños, can indicate presence or increase of protein level in tomato sauce such as that sold by the respondent manufacturing firm which advertises that its product has no protein or has zero protein level.

Other tomato sauce pouches also bought by Bautista also had protein based on the findings of the Central Analytical Services Laboratory of the National Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH) in UP Los Baños, Laguna.

Findings indicate that the tomato sauce with sample code A-BB0812091F8 purchased by Bautista had the highest protein level of 1.47± 0.07% crude protein while two other samples with codes B-BB081909GF8 and C-BB081209HF6 had 1.09± 0.03% and 1.11± 0.02% crude protein.

“Hinihiling ko sa BFAD na pansamantalang i-recall o bawiin muna ang nasabing tomato sauce na napapasama sa batch no. BB08129IF8,” said Bautista.

Hmmm...reading the article, wala namang nakalagay na puso talaga ng daga yun. The tests show indications that it may be the heart of a small mammal, so it could be a lot of things (puwede rin puso ng kuting, or any member of the rodent family, not necessarily a rat, e.g. hamster or gerbil).

Hehehe, why am I splitting hairs about the issue nga ba?

Malamang na-consume na ang suspect batch na ito... Last year nila nagamit ang tomato sauce... Maraming kainan during the Christmas Season and New Year celebrations.....
