but why shouldn't we change it religiously?
we're also required to change it regularly, even if it were synthetic.

change oil. the biggest non-secret to keeping your engine happy.

if manual says API-SN then use API-SN in the recommended viscosity

if manual says replace engine oil every 10,000kms or 6months whichever comes first, then do exactly that if you drive under NORMAL conditions (not severe!). yes this applies to MINERAL OIL too! in fact the manual doesn't specify a different interval when using mineral/synthetic

don't be an idiot and stretch it to 1yr because you used synthetic

some manufacturers say every 10K km ang change oil intervals for ordinary driving conditions.
what they might not be saying, is that the oil filter must be replaced every 5K km.
what's your take on this, guys?

LOL. it's not about the country it's about DRIVING CONDITIONS! there are countries that are hotter, or w/ worse traffic than the PH city you're now in

again, read the manual to be guided. SEVERE usually means repeated short trips (not enough time to get engine hot enough), idling a lot (i.e. engine turns/wears but ODO doesn't tick), etc

Let me just say that the operational term used in most manual is "OR". That said, if you encounter any of the said conditions under "Extreme", then you follow the maintenance schedule for it. You don't necessarily have to satisfy everything for it to be considered extreme.

Have read quite a few operating manuals of vehicles ... quite a few of them define severe driving conditions to include dusty and hot environments ... so the place you are driving in is also a factor in driving conditions ... also in this country, the weather is normally hot and does not fluctuate too much between hot and cold so engine oil, lubricants, etc takes lesser time to get to optimal temperature ...

Metro Manila and major cities in this country could be classified as severe driving condition areas ... while some provinces with less dust and traffic would be better ...

    open your manual

goto the maintenance section w/ the items "motor oil" and "oil filter"

look at the interval for the oil filter. there's usually a dot

    simple isn't it

Mineral , semi synthetic or fully synthetic?
