How much excess oil is too much before damage can happen to an engine?

Hi guys! I just want to ask your opinion regarding excess oil in an engine.

Last September, our new Hyundai Accent (diesel) was scheduled for its first 1000km change oil. Two weeks after the change oil we noticed that the oil level in the dip stick was a bit high, around an inch higher from the "F" or max level, we then brought the car to the service center to have the excess oil drained. right after the oil was drained the oil level on the dip stick was exactly back at the max level. Now after a week, I tried checking the oil level again, this time after around 12 hours (cold engine), surprisingly the oil level is around 1/3 inch higher from the max level.

My mistake was not checking the level of oil after the first change oil and trusting too much on the service center mechanics.

During the two weeks I was running the engine with the oil level on the dip stick an inch higher from the max level, what damage could possibly happen? I made some research and most of the things I've read is the possibility of "foaming" oil when the crank is hitting the oil which of course is bad for the engine.

but is that level of oil really dangerous? (an inch higher from the max level of the dip stick)

Before jumping to conclusions, check your manual and validate the procedure for checking the oil level. In most cases, the oil level is taken when the engine is warm.... like 10 minutes after turning off the engine.

also make sure that when you are checking the oil you must be in an even surface...the car must not be inclined so you can get accurate oil level. When I'm changing the oil of my previous car, the oil level was always just below the 'Full' or max level....just near the F mark.
Better make a few more checks on the oil level, then if it's really above the 'Full' level...maybe you can ask the casa to drain a little more oil from the engine because I think it's safer if you will not go beyond the 'F' mark...in the first place that's the purpose of the 'F' or max marking in the dipstick...for us not to go beyond it.

you said 1 week after daining oil to the F mark it was again 1/3 of an inch higher than F? if your oil checking procedure is right, as pointed out by oj88 above, then you might have a problem. this could indicate a leaking injector and diesel fuel is mixing with the oil and making the oil level rise. you will need an oil analysis done OR have each injector tested. i doubt it if they have an injector tester at the casa though.

I also have an Accent diesel & I observed that in the casa during a full oil change after they put in 5 liters, they start the engine, wait a while for the oil to circulate, shut it off then wait approximately 5 minutes or so for the oil to settle then refill to the proper level. After I check it in the morning, it's above the full mark. Most likely, there is still residual oil that hasn't settled in the casa when they refilled to the F. Try checking the oil a few minutes after shutting down & see if it is indeed overfilled.

BTT:

TS: Follow the procedure on the manual to measure the oil level. As I've mentioned earlier, most instructions say that the engine should be warm (ie. 10 minutes after it was shutdown from normal operating temp).

Also, when you pull out the dipstick the second time to take a reading, keep it straight and vertical. This prevents the oil from creeping up. Keep in mind also that some engines have curved or crooked dipstick neck/tube. As you pull it out, the tip of the dipstick would sometimes touch the tube. Doing so may introduce errors to the reading.

we are trying to help the TS to figure out first if he's really checking the oil level the right way....before jumping into a conclusion that the engine was indeed overfilled.

What about your post...did you even try to answer the TS's question?
