i've been reading this thread before office work almost eveyday and i would say that it has been interesting, specially for me who is new to diesel powered vehicle. It's really your posts/questions which make our thread interesting. And I just try to share my experiences with you.

i bought a 1997 hilander about three months ago. I'm pretty satisfied with its performance, including the suspension and the aircondition system, except for the white smoke and bad odor that comes out of its exhaust. Is it true that the 4ja1 isuzu engine is notorious for its white smoke emissions? No it's not true. If your compression is good and you're not burning oil, this could be a timing or a fuel injectoi system problem.

I've seen isuzu crosswinds of latest models (which i learned also use 4ja1 engines) having the same problem on to white smoke emissions. C
an you share your experiences on 4ja1 isuzu engines? thanks in advance. Of course. But I will first ask our technicians if they have noticed a white smoke trend on 4JA1s, then I'll get back to you.

    Sir Dieseldude,

These are my observations with my hilander 97.

    1) When going down my garage or coming from a flat surface going towards an upward incline, my engine dies out on me. Its idle drops when it gets to a certain angle and then the engine dies out. However, if going down the garage, when i use the handbrake to control its descent while stepping lightly on the accelerator, the engine does not die out even on the sharpest angle of the incline.

    2) When starting the vehicle in the morning, the idling sounds erratic with the rpm lower than normal. When the engine warms up, idling becomes stable. The fuel pump (not sure if thats what its called. Its the one that you pump when you drain the water accumulated by diesel fuel) is "soft" and when you pump it, idling becomes stable and "hiccups" which occur during the idling disappears.

Your comments on the above observations are greatly appreciated.

    Good day

    Sir Dieseldude,

These are my observations with my hilander 97.

    1) When going down my garage or coming from a flat surface going towards an upward incline, my engine dies out on me. Its idle drops when it gets to a certain angle and then the engine dies out. However, if going down the garage, when i use the handbrake to control its descent while stepping lightly on the accelerator, the engine does not die out even on the sharpest angle of the incline. Your idle rpm may be set too low. Adjust your idle speed to approx. 750 - 800 rpm, engine hot.

    2) When starting the vehicle in the morning, the idling sounds erratic with the rpm lower than normal. When the engine warms up, idling becomes stable. Idle rpm is a bit lower on cold engines due to high oil viscosity and lower compression pressures. Newer engines have a cold idle device which automatically raises engine rpm when cold, and brings down the rpm to normal when the engine reaches operating temp.

The fuel pump (not sure if thats what its called. This normally called a manual feed pump or a hand pump. This is used to bleed air when the fuel filter is replaced, or after draining water.

Its the one that you pump when you drain the water accumulated by diesel fuel) is "soft" and when you pump it, idling becomes stable and "hiccups" which occur during the idling disappears. It is possible that the check valve on the filter base is leaking, allowing fuel to drain back to tank when engine is shut down for some time. You may also have a suction leak on your fuel hoses and fittings.

Your comments on the above observations are greatly appreciated.

    Good day

    Hi Sir DieselDude,

Walang ano man.

    Hi Dieseldude!

Sir my R2 engine emits white smoke continuously. Here are the details:

Newly ouverhauled- its just about 3 months since it was overhauled.

It starts with one click but the idling is rough and there are lots of white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe.

There is still white smoke even after the engine reaches normal operating temp.

The injection pump is the rotary type. The vehicle is a Mazda B2200.

What can I try to do first without spending money? How can I isolate the issue correctly, replacing only those things that needs replacement. Ayoko po sana mag shotgun ng parts. Im looking at replacing the injection pump and injectors e. Bka may quick fix. I alredy went to a small diesel calibration shop. They told me to have the engine checked first. Thanks in advance for the advise.
