It's not just fuel consumption. When the engine is cold, lubrication isn't as effective, so more wear occurs. This is slightly lessened with multigrade synthetics (0w30 (not recommended for older engines or those needing thicker oil) to 10w40) which aren't as thick at startup, but it still isn't good for your engine. Granted, running without a thermostat at 1/4 on the temperature is better than running ice cold (0 on the temp.meter), but engine oils are designed so that they're flow best at "running temperatures". Running with them for extended periods of time at a temperature they're not designed to run at will cause a lot of problems... which is why motorists in the US switch to thinner oils in the wintertime.
Also, your catalytic converter doesn't work until it's up to heat, so running at low temps is bad for your emissions. Don't pollute. Fix that thermostat...

Thank you sir Niky for the information.
Two last questions sir.
Pareho po ba ang running temperature at normal operating temperature?
Anong ibig sabihin ng ice cold at 0 on the temp meter?Last edited by 4JGtootsie; May 18th, 2007 at 06:38 PM.

Di exact yung temp meter... 0 can mean anything below 50 degrees C.
If no water is going through the system, a whole lot of things can happen... warped heads, pistons and cylinder bores welded together... etcetera.

Clear na sir Niky. Thank you po!
Blits,
Nag crack yung block. Most diesel engines have liners or sleeves which can easily be replaced, hindi yon ang bumigay sa engine ni isuzu4ja1 but the block itself . The problem was no water was circulating around the water jacket of the block, because of the immense heat the block cracked. I dont know whether the radiator had water but im sure the block had none. It has happened before that the thermostat doesnt open therefore colder water in the radiator doesnt flow inside the block.

do you have a picture of the crack or picture lang of the damaged part.
isuzu 4JA1 engines have a thin cylinder sleeve, as thin as a sardine can lang maski i double sleeve pa to it is still thin. i cant imagine to can handle the compression if damaged na ang cylinder sleeves. unless iba ang sira. also isuzu engines commonly pag na sobra ng overheat mamatay ang makina as usual sa all diesels.
more details lang sa damage, 3 years na running ganda siguro mag ayos ng mechaniko. pics na lang to help us determine what part of the engine ang na damage.

as for the gear vs timing belt mas maganda gear no maintenance. but quieter ang belt.
but pwede yan it transfer, na gawa na dito sa amin. 4JB1 na belt ginawang gear type. and if you plan to change block or engine get the 4JB1 para larger and more powerful engine. 2.8 liters na siya or if you can find 4JB1T may turbo na.
Puwede i try, 1. Palit air filter 2. Linis throttle body 3. Linis MAF sensor 4. Check spark...
high idle RPM at engine start
