Generally, EFI engines are more efficient than carb ones with the same displacement. The Vios 1.3 EFI with VVTi has been tested to be significantly more efficient than the 2E 1.3 engine of past Corolla XLs and XEs. It is believed that new technology progressively translates to engines with more performance but same efficiency, same performance but better efficiency, or even both.
