Shell's "reduced octane" gasolines are not actually octane reduced, but the advertised octane is lower to prevent legal trouble. I got this confirmed from both Shell UK and Shell PH. Velocity (Optimax) is still guaranteed 97 minimum, but they advertise it as 95 in case some unscrupulous gas station mixes it with SUL and lowers the rating. Basically it saves trouble for the parent company.

May 27th, 2003 09:53 AM #13As long as you don't hear any knock, you're fine. Not all cars need or will benefit from the extra octane of those "designer" fuels. It's mostly marketing anyway.

June 21st, 2009 07:40 PM #16I used Petron Extra Unleaded for about 2 years particularly for city driving but when I drive long and fast (mga byaheng pampainit ng pwet hehehe) Petron XCS gamit ko.
Octane ratings in gas stations are not really reliable, and Philippine fuels are always substandard compared to other countries, ala lang, madaming sentiments about the quality of our fuels, something that politics and business get mixed into the equation pero off-topic na yun...

A decade ago, Caltex Techron Premium was my preferred fuel on my sedan. Never a fan of Extra Unleaded.
5 years ago I changed to Petron XCS.
Not so long ago I began to patronize NGas of Flying V.
For some reason, I never had a prolonged liking for Shell.

question, masama po ba pag "magkakahalo" ung gas sa fuel tank mo? for instance nagpakarga ako caltex silver today ng P300..tpos nxt wik shell super unleaded na 300 din, tpos knabukasan petron xcs naman..msma ba un? especially pag mgkakaiba ng octane pnakarga mo (Silver, Super unleaded, XCS)

Since we acquired a gasoline powered car, Lagi shell V-power na pinapakarga namin. Iba kasi ang hatak and ang FC and yung driving style namin is kakaiba rin.
Haha that's true. People entering the roundabout charge into it as if they have the right of way,...
