My CRV is full time AWD & my old Terrano is 4x4. They drive very differently. From my understanding, a 4x4 is different from an AWD. In an AWD, the car engages the wheel with the least traction in a situation like muddy or wet terrain otherwise, only 2 wheels operate if the road & traction is good. In 4x4, the other 2 wheels are engaged by the driver if he so wishes. So in 4x4, either 2 or 4 wheels operate as opposed to an AWD which is 2 or 3 or 4 wheels.
