Ok, so I'm looking for a second car which will be my primary car and baby...

We already have a Kia Sorento so that takes care of family car duties. I was initially sold on the new Gen Coupe but when I heard that Toyota is bringing the 86 to the Phils this May, and SUbaru bringing in the BRZ on November, it made me think twice.

I've seen posts that the GC is wide, while the 86 is smaller and easier to maneuver in tight spaces.

I've also seen posts that the GC is better for straight line speed while the 86 is better in terms of handling.

Which would you choose? What would be a better drive? Maintenance? FC? back seat comfort?

I'm targeting a purchase date of late this year/early 2013 so that means all these cars would be available by then.

There's no word on when or even if the Toyota 86 will come here.

We do know, however, that MotorImage will sell the BRZ. Since MotorImage is Singapore based, it's likely they can bring it in at a price that will compete with the Genesis Coupe... maybe. I doubt it will cost less than 2m pesos.

I'm quite excited to see the BRZ/86 in person and hopefully... to drive it. It should be amazing. The big question is whether it will be as much fun as the MX-5. (drives better than the Genesis, but is slower and much, much more expensive)

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

    my pick

from what i've heard both the brz and ft86 drives pretty damn well. not sure if as good as mx-5 but they're on different class though, can't really compare apples to oranges.

They're slightly bigger, slightly heavier and slightly more powerful. The MX-5 is the closest in spec to these cars.

Probably the best comparison (considering they're 2+2) would be the 1-series coupe... but that's much heavier at the same power level... and much more expensive.

Topgear.com.ph already reported that Toyota is bringing the 86 to the Philippines, and will be likely available as early as May. BRZ arrives November and might be a bit more expensive than the 86 (50K-100K difference). The price quoted for the 86 and the BRZ will be between P1.7M-2M, so the pricing is right smack against the GC. BRZ/86 can't be priced over P2M, since this will go head to head with the STi, which is the better choice given performance/power/practicality.

Ahh, hirap mag decide... GC na dapat bigla dumating pa itong 86/BRZ...

    GC likes:

    - bigger cabin space
    - more engine power
    - Proven tech (in relation to 86/BRZ GDI-boxer engine combo)

    Dislikes:
    - the front end... hindi talaga...
    - Big dimensions means harder to drive in traffic... though my Sorento is also wide, so I guess it wouldn't be much of a problem.
    -High FC (for 3.8L)

    86/BRZ Likes:
    - small dimensions, easier to maneuver in traffic.
    - Preppy engine, tuner friendly... Pistons are thick enough to support turbo platform.
    - Low center of gravity = better handling.

    86/BRZ dislikes:
    - pricey for a 2.0L
    - Unproven tech (don't know how GDI on a boxer engine will fare in terms of durability)
    - Small cabin space means half seats for rear (most likely like the Mini cooper)
    - Less power than the GC.

The rear seats are important to me since I'm a family guy already, so there may be a time when the rear seats may be occupied. However, handling/maneuverability is also very important since I'm an impatient driver in traffic. Though this is changing since its really hard to weave in and out in traffic with the Sorento.

My wife likes both cars which makes it more difficult for me to decide. Though she doesn't like the new GC face also.

I prefer to keep my options below the P2M mark. Still can't justify spending more than P2M on a second car/sunday driver/toy.

depends on what you want. if you want raw power combined with absolute handling then get the STi, if you just want a car that handles great then get the ft86 but i suggest waiting for the BRZ. get the GC out of your list since you're picking between the STi and ft86. anyway i've only driven the BRZ and FRS all i can say is it's probably the best handling jap car in stock form. it truly is a car that shows you that you don't need that much power to have fun with a car. if i have one i'd keep it stock and save the money for gas, racing school and tires, if ever i want to replace anything i'd probably only replace the brakes and tires for better handling. forget about power becuase brz/frs/86 isn't made for that, plus, anyone can go fast on a straight line but not everyone can go fast when they turn.

Those three cars [STi. FT86. GC] are already fast cars even in their stock form. Before you setting a goal to go faster, sharpen your driving skills first. Being able to handle corners fast and precise enough are a must. After all, the power you intend to have might be more than what your skills can handle. Baka maging grave mo pa yung car mo pag nagkataon. :headache:

The STI is fastest in most situations... well... until the next-generation 350 hp Genesis Coupe comes... but even then, without the track pack, the Coupe still won't handle as well as the STI.

The 86 will probably be the one whose speed and abilities you can enjoy most of the time. A lightweight sports car is exciting in more situations than a heavier, more powerful vehicle, which will just be frustrating to drive in traffic.

i've also driven the gc 3.8 track with 348hp, it doesn't accelerate as quick as the STi and Evo X. I was really disappointed by the lack of torque on that car. All the extra hp just went to waste with that one, it's faster than the old gc no doubt about that, but i was expecting it to be at least side by side with the evo and sti but it wasn't. i guess you can't really compare that with the STi and evo as they are 2 totally different monster compared to the GC, i'd say it's a direct competitor of the 350z/370z and infiniti g37s. if you compare it to the STi and evo it will be completely destroyed when it comes to performance.

Not surprising. Heavy car, and all that power comes up high... that's what enabled the old V6 to get relatively decent economy numbers in traffic despite the power.

I still haven't decided what to get, but it looks like the 86/brz is out. I measured the front lip and for sure it wouldn't make it up my condo ramp. Too low, and nose is too long. Of the 3 choices, the GC has a short nose which may allow it to go up my condo parking. Another car got thrown in the mix, the Ford Mustang V8. It's priced above my budget, but man! It looks good! And an icon as well...

The year end's fast approaching, I'll just post here the pic of what I finally decided on...
