An uncle of mine had a '93 Vitara with the 1.6L engine and manual transmission, but retrofitted a Volkswagen/Audi 1.6L diesel. Considering reliability and cross-country abilities, I'd rather get a Vitara over a RAV-4 everytime. Overall comfort was not bad for the Vitara too.
