October 19th, 2005 06:06 PM #6we own both types but it's of the 2nd trim levels. '98 familia gli (1.6L) and '00 sentra ex saloon (1.4L). here's how i compare them:
familia:
-stronger and more responsive engine (obviously since it has a bigger engine in our case)
-better handling
-has power side mirrors
-fat steering wheel
-nice transmission
-just right power steering feel (not too light, not too heavy)
-good sound system
-has anti-glare for the rear view mirror
-3 speed wiper (with intermittent)
sentra:
-more fuel efficient (again perhaps because of the smaller engine)
-softer ride
-more roomy (practically all aspects)
-better sound deadening
-has rear back-up sensors
-better aircon
-clear headlamps
-has rear defogger
problems:
familia:
-usual wear and tear (replaced battery, brake pads/shoes, belts, gaskets, oil seals)
-refaced rotors and drums
-overhauled power steering pump
-replaced transmission bushings, power steering hose and clutch master cylinder
-replaced engine supports (2)
-replaced shock mounting (1)
sentra:
-usual wear and tear
-replaced clutch assembly (twice)
-replaced shocks
-frequent headlight bulb (dim) replacement
all things considered, i'd prefer the sentra. but i'll miss the speed and go-kart feel of the familia. hehehe. maybe a 1.6L sentra can offset this. good luck!

IMO, Sentra would be a better choice. The fact that they are being sold cheap and there are a load of parts available.
