Mga sir, ask ko lang po which one to choose in terms of handling, exterior, interior, features, etc. I am planning to buy po kasi my first car this september, and medyo confused pa ko which to buy, given na madaming magagandang features and reviews and different cars ngayon. In your opinion po, which one would be more suitable for me, given that I am a medical student - which means most of the time I will just be using the car for Sunday drives or going home from Manila.

    TIA!

Both are good cars for me, but the Focus comes out better overall.

Price is rather similar, with the Lancer having the slight edge, but the Focus has a lot more features:

    - Traction control (ESP)
    - Front and rear parking sensors
    - Torque vectoring control (a pseudo LSD)
    - Hill-launch Assist
    - Active City Stop
    - Active Park Assist
    - Side mirror turn signal lamps
    - Cruise control
    - Dual-zone climate control
    - Bluetooth connectivity
    - Voice control
    - Moonroof
    - Push-button ignition

The Lancer has the following features up its sleeve though:

    - 18" rims
    - Extra airbag (7 vs 6)
    - Adaptive headlamps
    - Rockford Fosgate audio system w/ a subwoofer

Exterior looks-wise, the Focus Sport+ just appears more handsome to me. While the Lancer is menacing and extroverted, the Focus is a little more laid-back, but its beauty lies in its subtle curves. Don't forget that the Focus is newer and fresher too. Moving on to the interior, and it's really no contest, the Focus looks and feels more modern and upscale. From the weight of the doors, to the layout and feel of the plastics, it feels more expensive than the Lancer.

The Lancer has much more interior space though, as the Focus rides on a rather small chassis as evidenced with the compromised rear legroom.

Noone's really got to try the Focus' 170 HP GDI engine, 6-speed DCT, or its sport-tuned suspension, but a few reviews from privileged local auto journalists who got to drive the car in Thailand had nothing but praises for the car's performance and handling. Not to say that the Lancer is any slouch though.

Both are great cars, but if I were to buy, I'd put my money on the Focus.

I think you should go to ford focus. Mashadong marami ang lancer sa daan kahit na gt-a, madame pa din. Unlike focus, its newer and astig ang itsura. One more thing, Mashadong mabilis maubos ang gas ng lancer. I dunno with Focus.

    To the Thread Starter...

Between the Focus Sport and Lancer EX GTA... which one do you like better, simply just by it's look alone?

Sir, mas gusto ko exterior ng GTA, mas aggressive and mas pogi. Though ok din ang sa Focus, pero parang european yung look nya. Tsaka if ung GTA ung kotse ko, I can give an impression that I am single and ready to play. Unlike sa Focus na mukhang mas serious and me family na yung owner.

Sounds like you are already sold on getting a Lancer EX GTA.

Easy for you to say especially when you aren't paying for the car nor for the fuel.

7km/L for the GTA sounds about right. The Focus will consume roughly the same.

The Lancer still looks better for me. Still menacing as ever. But do choose a color limited to GTA only -- the blue one, I guess. Para meron ka pa rin sense of uniqueness among the other Lancers on the road.

The Focus isn't bad though. Has great features which you don't really need but a good-to-have nevertheless.

I just don't want to be a guinea pig as the Focus' engine is new & GDi. Still wishing that they wouldn't phase out the TDCi engine totally. That was one hell of an engine, powerful yet economical at the same time.

Same here. Focus' numerous electronic aids and toys are nice to have but not really necessary to have when you go out driving. One thing I do like is the torque vectoring feature which helps push the car harder into the corners when the car is driven near it's limits (which is when???).

Overall, the Lancer EX GTA has a bigger interior space which is more practical. And the GTA's very aggressive looks will be impossible to replicate on the Focus.

If you find the features appealing, then go for it. For me, even if you take out fancy but ulitmately useless novelties like the auto park and city stop features, the Focus still offers a lot more than the Lancer.

You cant really comment on the performance of the Focus vis a vis the Lancer yet, since noones done a test drive. Lancer fans can say that the Lancer drives and rides better, while Focus fans can say the same about their favorite as well. Paper specs dont mean much though, but if you wanna use that as a basis, then the Focus has the upper hand.

Try going to both Ford and Mitsubishi showrooms to try out both cars. If you can get a test drive, all the better.

Kung pogi points sa itsura parang maganda talaga ang lancer gta but its a 2008 model so expect na may lalabas na na bago soon. Hindi ko rin gusto ung masyadong maraming electronic sensors ng focus pag dating ng panahon mahirap magpagawa nyan pero kung after 3 years benta mo na he he. Between the two ill go for the focus dahil sa mas bago sya and matagal mo maeenjoy ang pagka brandnew nya. Focus ako pero konti lang lamang nya sa gta.

I totally agree with this. Mas bagay sayo lancer.

In my opinion, you'll know you're old if you won't like the lancer in terms of its exterior. No offense sa mga di gusto lng lancer.

The ultimate decision still lies on you though. Sarap ng problem ni TS.

Of course older buyers will go for the Focus because we KNOW better.

The new Focus is the newer and better reviewed car - generally considered to be one of the best, if not the best compact family car right now. It features more advanced technology (direct injection engine, dual clutch tranny, torque vectoring, active grille shutters, auto parking, auto braking etc), stronger boron steel body / top notch crash ratings, higher quality interior, a more practical hatch profile, wider track + longer wheebase + lower stance, better suspension, smaller but better looking wheels. It's a responsive but mature, refined, well rounded car that feel and handles like a more expensive car.

The GTA is also a good car (but the GT was actually better) but it is old and needs to be upgraded to become more competitive. Hell, I'd pick the 2nd gen Focus (esp the TDCi version) over it any day.

Tama! I had this problem way before we got our Focus TDCi. I prioritized the power along with fuel efficiency and interior quality (aanhin ko yung exterior looks kung ako din magddrive?) sayang lang kasi wala pang tdci for the new focus.
to the TS. pick the focus. just look at the specs, wala nang binatbat lancer.

The 2nd gen Focus always felt cramp inside when I was able to get a test drive unit over a weekend. Handling is good and so was the power from the TDCi engine.... but I was not happy driving it for long periods because of the cramp feeling.

The Lancer EX felt more spacious, even in my test drive in the Lancer EX 1.6L from Nasugbu to Manila, the car felt spacious and well mannered.

Yea the Lancer EX is more spacious. No arguments there - even against the new Focus - its aggressive windshield slope and sloping back end reduces space, plus the thick bulbous center stack can be intrusive. It's a small price to pay for the style and substance beneath. Plus you dont notice space when you are busy having too much fun with the car.

Speaking of the Lancer EX 1.6 ... I think anyone who wants a GTA (primarily for japorms) is better off getting the 1.6 GLX MT then just slap a bodykit and bigger wheels on it. You get the same look, and saves P300k at least (and cost less in terms of fuel pa) and since it is MT - it will be far more involving to drive than CVT.

Well unfortunately no TDCi for the new Focus. However let's pray that we get the 1.0 or 1.6 ecoboost version in the future, or at least a proper MT for the Sport hehe ...
