Ah.... but more people voted for Erap than anyone else... does that mean we should trust people? Because if we go by sales, the Corolla wins... hands down. 30 million buyers can't be wrong... can they? :hysterical:
People buy cars based on a few things... performance, fuel economy, reliability, etcetera... but most of those buyers buy based on just looks, preconceptions and biases. Just as with elections... not everyone reviews all the pertinent facts and data before making up their minds. In fact, some buyers don't even bother to go to the dealership to test-drive the car or see it in person... they just write a check and send it to the dealer.
That's why so many people sell off brand-new Forts secondhand, for example... it's a great rig if you occassionally have to drive out to the farm, but if you're the backseat type looking for a cushy ride, it's just not there... for some buyers, mostly guys who drive themselves, it's acceptable... but if you're a backseat passenger with a driver... well...
Or Expeditions... buyers get enthralled by the size, power and comfort... but they don't do their research and find, to their horror, that they've bought a monster that can drink gasoline like nothing else. I know satisfied Expedition owners. They buy it because it's really cheap luxury and they can afford the maintenance and fuel... but others, who don't know what they're getting into, just complain and complain and complain... hell... if you can't afford to own it, how were you able to buy it in the first place?
So, no... I don't trust sales. They'll tell me if a vehicle is popular, but not why it's popular.
There are some things which the Civic does better... the engine and transmission are the best on the market... but there are things the Mazda3 does better (suspension, seats)... it's up to the buyers to decide which they want. ;)
