No offense, but if you only have a budget of 150k for a car, I'm guessing your pockets aren't deep enough for either amortization or major repairs.
I guess you just have to look around the streets of Manila. It isn't hard to notice that most taxis use the Corolla, because of the availability of parts, and reliable.
The important thing is that it runs. Expect that the suspension already needs replacement, but just budget initially for the critical ones.
Electrical should come first. Battery replacement, and perhaps wiring - don't buy anything that looks like it has been rewired or kitang kita ang mga spaghetti. That means it has gone through a history of electrical problems.
Also, check the distributor if it needs replacement. Does it charge the battery etc. Just check for those items that will make the car stall.
If the electrical is okay, then budget for the small things as you go along. Like freon, cooling systems. The suspension, front muna, tapos pa dahan dahan lang.
I don't believe that you should get into amortization if your income is not sufficient. It's just going to get you into further debt.
If you buy a second-hand car and can't support it financially, worst case is that you have to sell it. But if you get into car financing, and decide you want to bail out, it's going to black list you with the banks (forever) so be careful.
Cheers!
mas mabuti gamitin mo as downpayment ng isang brand new na sasakayan, provided na kakayanin mo monthly amortization...
check the newspaper, mayroon ads, below 100thousand downpayment for a new car...
iyun lang kung ma-approve ka ng bank.

If you want a w123, get a US spec version 300D-T, 280E (up to '79), etc because most of them have all options like sunroof, locking glovebox, electric window lifters, power steering, central locking, among others. The European versions, however, also came with some options that the US cars could benefit from.
I find myself driving the w123 more than the w124. There's something with the w123 that the w124 lacks I guess. But the best MB combo for the older model enthusiast is the w123 and w124. W123 for classic car, w124 for more modern ride and comfort.
I once opened a friend's Kia's door, and nearly ripped it out because I pulled too hard. Needless to say those w123 & w116 doors are bank vaults.
try sentra LEC. tipid na, lakas a/c, and naka timing chain sya kya no worries bout changing it, unlike others timing belt ang gamit.
Benta ko sa Sentra Super Saloon ko 150k, pero hirap maghanap buyer hehehehe
I totally agree with mbeige. I drive both w123 and w124 series Mercs.
mga 90's na na secondhand japanese cars maraming ok pa.
marami ding ford pero hirap na sa spareparts eh.
toyota oking ok.
mitz or nissan ok din.
if i have 150k cash.. i will get myself a 91 galant gti.. why kasi baecause of d engine (4g63) saktong sakto 150 k dyan.
[quote=swordsman;932072]how about spare parts? madami pa ba makukuha? saang shop po ninyo usually dinadala w123/w124 nyo?[ /quote]
spare parts are abundant , pinapagawa ko yung cars sa manhattan motors in pasig ok na ok sila kausap, even if you dont drive a Benz gumagawa din sila kahit Jap cars.
The beauty of owning a Benz especially the older models is that parts are modular. Some chassis used parts you can find in other chassis. They may cost a bit more than your usual Japanese car parts prices but IMO they are well built especially for something that's over 15 years old.
For example, if you need parts for your w123 electric window switches, an early generation w201 and w126 has them if you can't find a w123 parts car. Or another, if you need an engine, the w126 300SD, w123 300D-T, w123 300TD-T, w123 300CD-T, and w116 300SD share similar engines, with the exception of the w116 having a more primitive design.
PhP150,000 is roughly $3000, or the exact amount we paid for our 1990 300TE w124 estate. It needs a few things here and there but they're mostly annoying things like the suspension is knocking at times indicating maybe a ball joint is needed, or bushings, etc. Some things can be expensive but most of the time they'll last long once you get it fixed. After all, these are MB's and surely the previous owners have loved driving them so if you want a used MB, change the parts that go wrong to OE brand new units so your car can serve you another decade or so or until you sell it, pass it on to your kids, or even your grandkids.
I once took my car on a single day 700 mile trip to meet fellow w123 owners. I'm sure they drove the same distance or slightly more or less to meet up at the designated meeting place halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Not a single problem, in fact I could have driven more, but I was too tired. We cruised for 70mph average, took high speed runs to max out the speedometers, climbed up steep hills behind my friend's 240D which could not go past 45mph, and maintained a combined 28MPG totaling two full tank's worth of fuel. Well not really, more of 1.5 full tank since I can manage 500 miles in one tank![]()
