Yung diesel w124 is the "whispering diesel" kasi tahimik yung makina nila and combined with the hood insulation and double firewall, you barely hear it clattering from within the cabin just like the new CDI engines.
Problematic sa w124 diesel ay yung aluminum head nila. The OM603 engines were designed with aluminum heads for weight savings but it turns out pag nag overheat ka, patay ka dahil either headgasket or warped head labas niyan. So be very careful of that lalo na dyan where extreme driving conditions push the limits every day.
Other than that the OM603 is also not the best to DIY when doing glow plugs because of the cross flow intake manifold design. Pagawa mo na lang sa mekaniko mo, but they might charge more so I don't have experience with that there.
The best w124 diesel - for me at least - is a 1995 E300D. Updated look, late model design for chassis range ('86 to '95), all features available pag US version, etc. I don't remember what engine they used I think OM603 pa rin ba? Can you verify this Ron?
Just make sure the wiring harness problem has been resolved too, which was a problem with '93 to '95 cars in tropical climates where the biodegradable material easily degrades in hot climates and in combination with hot engine temps. This results in shorts, wiring insulation deteriorating, and so the wires/lines get in contact with each other wreaking havoc in your system's electronics.

October 20th, 2007 09:25 PM #59among the choices, i would go for the '97 Corolla XL. as long as it wasn't used as a taxi, you're better off with it than with your other choices. very solid and reliable, fuel efficient, safe (compared with your other choices, since it's larger), and you get stable resale value in case you want to upgrade in the future.
we have a '96 corolla with 213,000+kms on the odometer, but it still had no signs of slowing or breaking down

someones are (at last!) loudly asking, "why did they turn off the countdown timers?"
