We have both an SG and GS in our family. My bro owns the SG while me and my mom own a pair of GS CVX. Having driven both, the GS is light years ahead of the SG.
^I'm willing to bet those are the first gen or surplus Starexes from the late 1990s. Hyundai has long corrected those issues.
And kalawang is a result of the muck and moisture building up inside the fenders in most cases. Meaning, the vehicle isn't washed properly.
BTW, i still drive our Hiace GL Grandia around town or on long trips from time to time. No issues with me on driving it around except that it won't fit in some building parking places.

Sa FC, di ako sure sa SG, since I drove it only a couple of times pero yung sa GS siguro average ko is mga 7-8km/ liter sa city driving. In terms of durability, yung GS ko di pa naman pumapalya pero yung SG ang alam ko sira yung immobilizer nun, wala pang stock yung parts so waiting ngayon pero nagawan naman ng paraan na ma-disable yun so nagagamit pa rin. Sa maintenance naman mahirap I-compare kasi the SG is casa maintained while the GS is only maintained by our mechanics pero mura ang parts ng GS as long as you know where to get it.
My GS was bought at Pitstop more than 3 years ago so lapse na rin yung warranty, I only had it serviced sa kanila at 1k and 5k pms, it only has 10k sa ngayon, our other GS naman was bought from a private importer kaya walang warranty pero nakaka 25k na ang takbo nun after almost 3 years. I don't really trust casa people, I avoid them whenever I can.
Bro ko kase is one of those fixated people na pag hindi casa di tama ang
gawa. That's why the SG is casa maintained.

How time flies. It's been over 3 years na pala. I seem to recall having read some of your posts here and at THP when you were deciding on the GS. That's if my memory serves me right.
I'm likewise not a fan of casas. For the same time and less expense I can get the service done by my suking talyer c/o my suking mekaniko, na may kasamang kwento at recommendation pa. Anyhow, sorry for the Ot.

I hope not.
Regarding rust, I suppose cars in the colder provinces are more prone to it due to the moister environment. Especially if the car is parked outside. My uncle's old '94 Lancer was rusted heavily in various parts. In fact the trunk already had a hole on it due to rust.He lives in Baguio and there is no enclosed garage, so the car is exposed to the dew daily. Now that is already a Japanese car. I'm sure with a properly rustproofed car, it would be rust free for decades with regular cleaning and proper protection.
Between the two I'd take the GS. Safety wise, there is the presence of a hood. At least it is the engine shielding you, and not like the SG where it is you shielding the engine.Comfort wise naman... Ever since the Starex started competing with the Hiace, it has always won in the comfort department, and the Hiace was always known for being "matagtag". Old school leaf spring rear suspension in the Hiace versus the Starex's multilink proves this. Performance wise, 174hp and 402Nm versus 102hp and 260Nm... In terms of fuel efficiency, I believe the Hiace wins due to the weaker engine. It does not have the capability to go too fast and so does not consume much fuel. But then it has adequate consistent low end torque over a wide powerband so that it does not run out of steam in low speeds, which results in better gas mileage. The Starex has the capability to go faster, hence greater ability to consume fuel. If the Starex is driven at the same pace as the Hiace, it should do better.
7 years sa amin, 175K odo. Casa maintained since 1000km PMS.
Alaga eh.
