Well kasi technically the Santa Fe is a CUV or a cross-over utility vehicle. In other words its has the body and space of an SUV but with the riding comfort and maneuverability of a sedan. SUV yung mga ladder frame body, not necessarily coming from a pickup na nilagyan lang ng bubong like the Everest, Fortuner and Montero Sport. As long as ladder frame SUV na yun.

Pajeros and Prados have done away with the ladder frame and are still SUVs

but an SUV with a 4speed automatic is a waste of money now that even a Ford Focus has 6
the Santa Fe is an excellent vehicle!
the Koreans have outdone the Japanese in car making, at least in a comfortable real world vehicle.

    yassum!

they are both now monocoque (hope i spelled that right)

they did it to get a better safety rating from US Insurance companies
since ladder frames are more prone to turn over in high speed driving

it actually lead to a lower ground clearance
technically it should lessen its real off-road capacities

but still we saw the the Pajero racing and winning in the Paris Dakar Rally

though that kind of rally is only one dimensional as per 4X4 use, pang sand and road-less flat surfaces lang

Ground clearance is based solely on suspension design. The only reason you'll see a lower ground clearance is if the manufacturer lowers the vehicle around the suspension, because the unibody allows tighter packaging than a ladder frame.

There were some who were complaining that the unibody is less tough off-road, but I've heard of suspension tower failure on ladder-frames used in off-road duty, also. It all depends on how well-made the vehicle actually is, rather than how it's made.

But yeah, there is an advantage off-road for ladder-frames... having the frame-rails exposed underneath everything provides protection for mechanical components tucked up under the rails... and provides a solid mounting point for skid-plates. And ladder-frames can carry some pretty heavy loads...

The thing with the Paris-Dakar Pajeros is... they're not unibody... they're space-frame buggies.

Toyota has just introduced a new D4D engine for the hilux, the 2.5 diesel 2KD VN Turbo with 144 Hp & 343nm * 1,600-2,800rpm..

I expect toyota to have this engine as a replacement to their underpowered 2.5 diesel engines found on the hilux, fortuner, innova & Grandia with just 102 Hp.. The new engine would fairly compete with the 2.5 diesel engines of Ford, Mitsubishi & Nissan..

    Toyota 2.5 D4D VN turbo
    - 144 Hp * 3,400 rpm
    - 343nm * 1,600-2,800 rpm

    Mitsubishi 2.5 DI-D
    - 136 HP * 3,500 rpm
    - 314nm * 2,000 rpm

    Ford 2.5 Duratorq
    - 143 HP * 3,500 rpm
    - 330nm *1,800 rpm

    Nissan 2.5 Di (4X2)
    - 144 HP * 4,000 rpm
    - 356nm * 2,000 rpm
