Mitsubishi Pajeros are usually reupholstered at the market where they are to be sold. Just like the Fortuner, they roll of the assembly line wearing cloth seats. Even in the UK, the GEN II.5 units used to arrive with cloth seats and would be reupholstered locally.

AFAIK, the only leather clad models that roll off the plant in Japan are the Exceed models which would be too expensive for the local market. Plus, local buyers aren't exactly wild with the JDM paint scheme of the accent color being in middle part of the body.

The local leather upholster (Portillo's?) might not yet be ready to handle seats with a built in explosive charge.

In the Volvo 850, the airbag also deploys from the seat. It has leather from the factory.
